Four Gdańsk Walking Routes with Distances
Four self-guided routes cover the Main Town, the waterfront and the shipyard, and none needs a ticket. Distances and times below are approximate, and the longest takes about 2.5 hours.
The Royal Way, about 2.5 km
Start at the Upland Gate and pass the Golden Gate before turning along Długa. Look up at the gables of the merchant houses, including Uphagen House, then stop at Długi Targ for the Town Hall, Neptune’s Fountain and Artus Court. Leave through the Green Gate to the river. Allow about two hours and expect rebuilt Dutch-style facades, because the Main Town was largely destroyed in 1945. Join a guided Old Town walk via GetYourGuide if you prefer a guide.
Mariacka and the Gothic quarter, about 1.8 km
Enter from the river through St Mary’s Gate and walk the cobbles of ulica Mariacka. Stone rain spouts shaped like animals project from the houses, and amber workshops fill the cellars and terraces. Circle the huge brick mass of St Mary’s Basilica, then continue along ulica Piwna, once home to the city’s brewers, to the Great Armoury. Plan about 90 minutes with a coffee stop.
Motława and Granary Island, about 3 km
Follow the quay at Długie Pobrzeże past the Crane and the old water gates. A modern pedestrian footbridge crosses to Granary Island, where a newer boardwalk has restaurants and bars looking back at the water. Return over the Green Bridge. This loop takes about 90 minutes and is the best route for sunset. The Crane costs 23 PLN and 17 PLN to enter and is free on Wednesday 13:00-17:00, with details at nmm.pl .
Shipyard and Solidarity trail, about 3.5 km
Start at Shipyard Gate No. 2, where striking workers hung portraits of Pope John Paul II in August 1980. On Plac Solidarności stand the three steel crosses of the 1970 monument and the European Solidarity Centre, which explains the strikes and the rise of Solidarność. The route runs through former shipyard land and takes about 2.5 hours with the exhibition. Opening times are at ecs.gda.pl , and the sixth-floor roof terrace is free. Search shipyard history tours on Viator for a guided version.
Practical tips
- Wear closed shoes with grip. The granite and brick stones are uneven and slippery after rain.
- ZTM trams and buses cost 4.80 PLN per single ticket, or 22 PLN for 24 hours, to reach the shipyard end.
- Drinking alcohol on streets and squares is illegal in Poland, with a 100 PLN fine.
- After dark, promoters on Długa invite visitors into basement clubs with free-shot offers. Decline them and keep walking.
If it rains
The Royal Way and Mariacka routes pass several indoor stops. Artus Court and the Main Town Hall are both on Długi Targ and Długa, at 26 PLN regular and 19 PLN reduced, and the Amber Museum in the Great Mill is 37 PLN and 26 PLN. Monday is free at all three, and all are closed on Tuesday. The Crane on the quay is a shorter indoor stop and is free on Wednesday 13:00-17:00.
The verdict
Do the Royal Way first, as it gives context for the others, then pair Mariacka with the waterfront in a single afternoon. The shipyard route works best as a morning of its own. For tourism information, see visitgdansk.com and the sightseeing guide .
Before you go
Start routes before 10:00 in summer, when the quay and Mariacka fill with visitors.
