Extended Trips From Ho Chi Minh City
Cai Rang’s floating market runs at real strength for about three and a half hours a day, starting around 5am, which a same-day tour from Ho Chi Minh City simply cannot reach before the boats thin out.
Can Tho, given the time it needs
The market has genuinely shrunk, to roughly 200 trading boats today from about 500 in 2016, and its real window is 05:00 to 08:30. Two to three days changes what you actually see: arrive in Can Tho by evening, take a pre-dawn boat out while the market is still working, then spend the day among canals, orchards, and a rice-noodle workshop before returning. This is a different trip from a rushed My Tho or Ben Tre day option, not simply a longer one.

Cat Tien National Park
Around 150 km and 3.5-4.5 hours from the city, Cat Tien is southern Vietnam’s main lowland rainforest reserve, best suited to a 2-3 day visit: jungle trekking under tung and lagerstroemia trees, night spotlighting safaris for sambar deer, wild boar, and civets, and a trek or jeep ride to Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake) for endangered Siamese crocodiles and endemic primates, including golden-cheeked gibbons and black-shanked douc langurs. Vietnam’s last Javan rhino was poached here in 2010, and tigers no longer survive in the reserve in any functional number, so neither belongs on a realistic itinerary.
Les Rives’ route listings cover river options toward the delta for anyone extending a Mekong leg by boat rather than road. Pack for humidity rather than heat alone: Cat Tien’s trails run under dense canopy, and the night safari specifically calls for closed shoes and long sleeves against insects rather than the sandals that work fine in the city.
A longer circuit
A Cu Chi Tunnels morning already pairs naturally with Tay Ninh’s noon Cao Dai ceremony for one long day; a 3-4 day version extends that combination into an overnight Mekong leg instead of trying to compress all three into single-day trips. My Tho, Ben Tre, Vung Tau, and Tay Ninh alone remain genuine same-day options on their own; see the day trips guide for those.
For the city-based sights worth pairing with either version of this trip, see the sightseeing guide , and the 5-day itinerary has a full day-by-day plan.
Book the Can Tho overnight specifically for the market; a shorter version puts you on the water only after the real trading has already wound down for the day.
