Guided Tours Around Ho Chi Minh City
The single most-booked packaged trip in southern Vietnam pairs a morning of District 1 and 3 landmarks with an afternoon at the Cu Chi Tunnels, and the choice tourists rarely get told to make is which of the two tunnel sites they end up at.
The central circuit
Independence Palace at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, open daily 07:00-18:00, keeps its 1960s presidential staterooms, an underground command bunker, and the gate Tank 843 crashed through on 30 April 1975; general admission with the exhibition runs 80,000 VND adult, 20,000 VND child, or 40,000/10,000 VND for the palace alone, plus a 25,000 VND electric-car ride around the grounds. The War Remnants Museum on Vo Van Tan, 40,000 VND, open 07:30-17:30 with a midday break around 12:00-13:30, presents the Vietnamese account of the war and is genuinely distressing for some visitors; it runs about two hours, worth knowing before buying tickets for children. The Saigon Central Post Office, designed by Alfred Foulhoux rather than Gustave Eiffel, and Notre-Dame Cathedral’s exterior, its scaffolding coming down ahead of a 2027 interior reopening, round out the loop before Ben Thanh Market.
Cu Chi: two sites, one decision
Most budget shared-bus tours go to Ben Dinh, about 60 km out, where the tunnels have been widened and reinforced with concrete and a firing range operates alongside the tour route. Ben Duoc, roughly 75 km out, keeps unwidened original-scale sections that require genuine crawling, plus the solemn Ben Duoc Memorial Temple honoring over 44,000 fallen soldiers, and draws far fewer groups. A shared coach runs roughly $15-40 per person; a private van, $75-120. The standalone entrance fee is disputed across sources, roughly 90,000 to 135,000 VND, sometimes structured as a base fee plus a separate service charge rather than one flat number.

The hop-on-hop-off option
Anh Vietnam’s red double-decker bus runs a daytime loop from the Central Post Office 08:00-15:30 and a separate non-stop evening loop 16:00-22:30 from Nguyen Hue Street; hopping on and off is not possible during the evening run. Multilingual audio covers the same District 1 and 3 stops as a walking tour, at a slower pace and with air conditioning.
Current hop-on-hop-off schedules run direct from the operator. For the Opera House interior, the only realistic access is a ticketed evening performance of the A O Show through Lune Production , since there is no daytime walk-in.
Book the Cu Chi combo if logistics matter most, but ask which site the tour visits before paying: the fifteen extra kilometers to Ben Duoc buys a quieter, more original tunnel and skips the shooting range entirely if that matters to you.
