Cooking classes get most of the attention in Ho Chi Minh City’s workshop scene, but the city’s craft studios, working in clay, lacquer, and silver, are just as easy to book and get far fewer visitors.
Pottery: a centuries-old clay tradition, taught in two hours
Southern Vietnam’s pottery heritage traces back to the red clay kilns of neighboring Bình Dương and Biên Hòa provinces, and that lineage shows up in the beginner wheel-throwing and hand-building studios scattered through Thảo Điền and Bình Thạnh. A typical two-hour session has you shaping a cup, bowl, or small vase, applying a colored slip glaze, then leaving the piece behind to be fired before collection, for roughly 350,000 to 500,000 VND. No prior experience is expected, and studios generally run sessions in both English and Vietnamese for mixed groups.

Lacquerware: fifteen stages most visitors only see the last one of
Traditional sơn mài lacquerware uses resin from the toxicodendron vernicifluum tree, built up over as many as fifteen stages with inlaid eggshell, gold leaf, or mother-of-pearl before a piece is finished. Full production takes weeks, so what a visitor books is realistically a demonstration or a short mini-workshop covering one or two stages, at studios around Bình Thạnh and District 1, rather than a start-to-finish piece. Knowing that going in avoids the disappointment of expecting a finished lacquer box after a two-hour class.
Silversmithing: saw, solder, and a fineness worth double-checking
A District 3 silversmithing studio, Ddreamer , trading since 2014, runs hands-on classes where you saw, solder, file, and polish your own silver ring, pendant, or bracelet for roughly 600,000 to 900,000 VND, using their own tools under a working silversmith’s supervision. One detail worth getting right if it matters to your piece: sources disagree on the silver, some listing 940 where the studio’s own retail pages still advertise 925 sterling, so ask when you book.

Coffee, for the morning before a craft class
