Day Trips from Leipzig by Train
Day trips from Leipzig
Leipzig sits on the main rail routes of eastern Germany, so several cities are an easy round trip. Timings below are from the Hauptbahnhof, and the DB Navigator app shows current departures.
Starting from the Hauptbahnhof
Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is one of Europe’s largest terminal stations and an ICE hub, so most departures leave from the one building. Trams, buses and the S-Bahn in Zone 110 get you there from the centre, and the City Tunnel links it with the Markt, Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and Bayerischer Bahnhof. Note your return train before you leave, and allow time at the end of the day for the journey back.
Dresden
Dresden is the classic day trip. The ICE takes about 1 hour 05 minutes, and a regional train takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. That leaves a full day for the old town, and the regional service suits travellers who are not in a hurry.
Berlin
The ICE to Berlin takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. It makes a long but workable day for a first look at the capital.
Erfurt and Weimar
Erfurt and Weimar are about 45 to 55 minutes away by ICE. Both are close enough to reach in under an hour from the Hauptbahnhof.
Halle (Saale)
Halle is the nearest option. The S-Bahn line S3 takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and regional and ICE trains are faster still. This is an easy half-day trip when you do not want a long journey.
Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Naumburg
Both towns are reached by regional trains. Journey times vary with the connection, so check DB Navigator for the timetable on the day.
Colditz Castle
Colditz Castle has no railway station. Plan to go by bus or car, and check the route and timetable before you set out.
Overnight versions
Dresden, Halle, Naumburg and Wittenberg can also be combined into an overnight loop if one day is not enough. The page on multi-day trips from Leipzig sets out the options.
Tickets for the region
The Leipzig Regio Card covers the whole MDV area, well beyond the city. A day ticket costs EUR 26 and a three-day ticket EUR 56. Both prices come from the 2026 Leipzig Card flyer . The Deutschlandticket costs EUR 63 a month from 1 January 2026. The airport (LEJ) is about 15 minutes from the Hauptbahnhof on the S5 or S5X, and the S3 does not go there.
