Day Trips From Las Vegas
Everything on this list fits into a single day out of Las Vegas without a predawn start, except one entry that gets included specifically so you know to skip it.
Red Rock Canyon, 25 to 30 minutes west
The closest of the desert day trips: a 13-mile Scenic Drive, the Calico Tanks Trail, and Ice Box Canyon. From October 1 through May 31, 8am to 5pm, the Scenic Drive requires a timed-entry reservation booked at recreation.gov ($2 fee, plus a $15 per-vehicle entrance fee); no reservation is needed outside that window. Rock surfaces reach 130°F in summer, so plan hiking before 10am June through August and carry a gallon of water per person.
Valley of Fire State Park, about an hour northeast
Fire Wave, White Domes Trail, Elephant Rock, and Atlatl Rock’s petroglyphs sit roughly 55 miles out via I-15. Entry runs $15 per vehicle for non-residents ($10 for Nevada residents). Nevada State Parks closes the Fire Wave and Pastel Canyon trails from May through September once temperatures pass 105°F, so check ahead if you’re going in summer.
Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, 45 minutes southeast
The pedestrian sidewalk on the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge gives a free view 900 feet above the dam. On-site, the Visitor Center is $15, the Powerplant Tour descending into the 650-foot turbine room is $30, and the Full Dam Tour is $40 (minimum age 8, on-site tickets only). Grand Canyon West Rim, 2 to 2.5 hours
At 125 miles, Grand Canyon West is a genuine day trip: 6 to 8 hours round trip with time at the rim. It’s Hualapai tribal land, not part of Grand Canyon National Park, so NPS passes don’t apply. Admission starts at $68, with the glass-floored Skywalk pushing that to $93-plus (personal cameras aren’t allowed on the Skywalk itself). Grand Canyon South Rim, not a day trip
At 280 miles and 4.5 to 5 hours one-way, the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park adds up to 9 to 10 hours of driving alone. This one belongs on the multi-day trips list instead, with a night either at the rim or in Williams or Flagstaff along the way.
Mount Charleston, 45 minutes northwest
At elevations from 7,500 to nearly 12,000 feet in the Spring Mountains, temperatures here run 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the Strip, which makes it a summer escape from the heat and a winter base for skiing at Lee Canyon.
The verdict
