Day Trips From Downtown Chicago
Chicago’s rail links reach a surprising amount of the Upper Midwest without a rental car. Four trips fit comfortably into a single day; two more places people ask about do not.
Milwaukee, 89 minutes by train
Amtrak’s Hiawatha service runs from Union Station straight to Milwaukee’s Intermodal Station in 89 minutes, with 7 round trips Monday through Saturday and 6 on Sunday. One-way coach fares run $19 to $37 depending on how far ahead you book. The Milwaukee Art Museum, with Santiago Calatrava’s wing-like Quadracci Pavilion, is a 15-minute walk from the station, and the Harley-Davidson Museum and Third Ward dining are close behind. Indiana Dunes, by the South Shore Line
The South Shore Line commuter train leaves Millennium Station and reaches Dunes Park Station in about an hour and 20 minutes; treat the one-way fare as roughly $9 and confirm the current number at mysouthshoreline.com , since trains run hourly on weekdays and every two hours on weekends after 2026 track work. Indiana Dunes National Park charges $25 per vehicle or $15 for a walk-in or train passenger, valid for 7 days, and covers 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline plus the climb up Mount Baldy. Oak Park, Frank Lloyd Wright’s laboratory
The CTA Green Line reaches Harlem/Lake station in 22 minutes for $2.75, or Metra’s Union Pacific West line reaches Oak Park in 16 minutes for $4. The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, where Wright developed the Prairie School style between 1889 and 1909, runs guided 60-minute interior tours for $25, and Unity Temple, his 1908 reinforced-concrete landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, runs its own $20 tour. Starved Rock State Park, by car only
Starved Rock sits 95 miles southwest in Utica, a 1 hour 45 minute to 2 hour drive on I-80 with no passenger rail connection, so this one needs a rental car. Eighteen sandstone canyons carved by glacial meltwater and 13 miles of marked trails are free to enter, with free parking, but the cliffs are unstable and staying on marked trails is enforced for a reason. Lots fill and gates close by 10am on summer and peak fall weekends.
What does not fit in a day
