Chișinău on Foot: Routes and Walking Tours
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria and has no warning for the rest of Moldova (GOV.UK ). The US State Department lists Moldova at Level 2 and Transnistria at Level 3 (travel.state.gov ). Russian drones have crossed Moldovan airspace during the war in Ukraine, and Chișinău airport has had brief closures. Check flight status and both governments’ advice before you book.
Chișinău on Foot
The centre is flat and compact, and walking is the best way to see it. A full upper-town route takes half a day, and a market stop or a Jewish heritage walk adds an hour or two each. Wear comfortable shoes.
The Upper-Town Route
- Begin at the Triumphal Arch and the Nativity Cathedral.
- Cross Stephen the Great Central Park, passing the Alley of Classics and the Pushkin monument.
- Visit the museums on Strada 31 August 1989: the National Museum of Art and the National Museum of History. Each costs 50 MDL.
- Walk to Kogălniceanu street for the Ethnography and Natural History Museum.
- Head down to the Cascade Staircase and Valea Morilor Park to finish.
Museums close on Mondays, and the Ethnography museum also closes on the last Wednesday of each month. Details are on muzeu.md .
Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard and Columna Street
The boulevard is the central axis, and Columna street branches off it with a pedestrian stretch, cafes and wine bars. Carpe Diem Wine Shop and Bar, at Columna 136, pours wine daily from about 11:00 to 23:00.
Central Market
The Central Market, with its flower market, is free to browse and sits near the Central Bus Station on Mitropolit Varlaam street. Carry lei, and watch your pockets, as the British FCDO flags pickpocketing in Chișinău.
Jewish Heritage Walk
Plan about two hours and keep a quiet, respectful tone. The route usually runs:
- The ghetto monument at the corner of Grigore Vieru boulevard and Ierusalim street.
- The Choral Synagogue building at Vlaicu Pârcălab 75, opened in 1913 and now the Anton Chekhov Russian Drama Theatre. A plaque marking its past as a synagogue was added in 2023.
- The 1903 pogrom memorial in Alunelul Park, Calea Ieșilor.
- The old Jewish cemetery on Strada Milano, an overgrown and open site where respectful dress is expected.
The Jewish Community of Moldova, at jcm.md , can point you to guides. In July 1941 the Romanian authorities confined the surviving Jews of the city in a ghetto, and most were later murdered or died in deportations.
Free Walking Tours
Independent guides list tip-based tours on GuruWalk and FreeTour.com. Meeting points vary by guide, and the common ones are on Ștefan cel Mare boulevard, at the top of Columna street, near the National Opera and by the Organ Hall lions. Book on the platform, check the start time for your date and tip at the end.
Walking Tips
- Buses and trolleybuses cost 7 MDL if tired legs call for a ride. There is no metro.
- Streets can be poorly lit at night, so finish your walk before dark.
- Carry a copy of your passport photo page.
