Moldova 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Six days is the 5 day plan plus Soroca Fortress, done properly as its own day rather than rushed onto another. Shorter, the 3 and 4 day plans stay closer to the capital. The 7 day version adds Gagauzia on top of everything here, the last genuinely new region within reach.
Book these before you go
- A room in Chișinău for five nights, or split one night at Purcari’s on-site hotel if you’d rather not drive back the same evening.

Day 1: Chișinău
Ștefan cel Mare Central Park, the Cathedral, the Triumphal Arch, then the National Museum of History of Moldova , 50 MDL, before Piața Centrală’s flower market in the afternoon.
Day 2: Orheiul Vechi and Cricova
An hour to Orheiul Vechi’s cliffside cave monastery, 20 MDL admission, headscarf required for women at the cave church. Then 45 minutes to Cricova for its underground “city” tour, booked ahead.
Day 3: Căpriana Monastery, slower
Free, quiet, 40 km southwest in the Codru forest, founded 1429. Deliberately not a second wine cellar; Mileștii Mici’s Guinness record is real but it’s the same tunnel-and-tasting format as Cricova, and doing both inside a week is repetition, not new ground. Ethnography Museum or Piața Centrală for the afternoon.
Day 4: Transnistria, honestly
A guided day tour to Tiraspol and Bender Fortress. Transnistria sits at “Reconsider Travel,” a genuinely higher US State Department tier than Moldova overall, driven by Russian troop presence and no consular reach. You’ll get a migration card at the border, roughly 10 hours’ validity, keep it until you exit. It runs its own currency, no foreign-card ATMs work there, carry small cash. Never photograph checkpoints or military personnel.
Day 5: Purcari
Southeast toward the Dniester, about two hours each way, terraced vineyards rather than underground caves, and the source of Negru de Purcari, the country’s flagship export red. Book a tasting ahead.
Day 6: Soroca Fortress, given its own day
Here’s the honest framing most six-day itineraries skip: Soroca is 160 km from the capital, roughly two and a half hours each way, and tacking it onto another day’s plan turns both destinations into a rush. Given its own full day, as it gets here, it’s genuinely worth it. The 16th-century round fortress, built under Ștefan cel Mare on the Dniester, is compact, an hour or so at the site, tickets from a separate office rather than the gate, closed Monday and Tuesday, so check that before you drive. Below the fortress, Gypsy Hill’s elaborate mansions built by wealthy Roma families, some modelled on landmarks like the Bolshoi Theatre, are worth a slow drive-by from the public road; many now sit empty, owners abroad, so this is architecture to view respectfully rather than a “living museum” stop. Head back to Chișinău for a last dinner.
Is a day trip to Soroca worth 5 hours of driving?
Yes, if it’s the only thing on the day. At 160 km each way the round trip alone runs close to five hours, which is a bad trade if you’re also trying to fit in a winery or a monastery the same day, and a genuinely good one when Soroca Fortress and Gypsy Hill are the whole plan.

Before you go: the short safety note
Moldova proper is a normal, safe, cheap country to visit, not a war zone, even with six days spent covering most of it. It sits at US State Department Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” because it borders Ukraine’s war, meaningfully below Ukraine’s own advisory tier. Southern Moldova-Ukraine border crossings can close without warning from strikes on the Ukrainian side, most recently in August 2026; none of this itinerary needs that crossing, but check Moldovan Border Police channels if your plans ever do. Transnistria’s separate “Reconsider Travel” flag is covered on day four. Off-trail landmine and UXO caution applies in central Moldova’s fields, forests, and Dniester riverbanks; stick to marked paths at Orheiul Vechi, Purcari, and around Soroca Fortress. Confirm all of this at travel.state.gov close to your dates.
One concrete tip: buy Soroca Fortress tickets at the separate ticket office, not the gate, and note it’s closed Monday and Tuesday. Showing up on the wrong day for the wrong ticket line wastes the one day this trip gives it.
