Moldova 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Five days is the 4 day plan plus a full day southeast to Purcari’s wine estates, real new geography rather than a rushed run at Soroca. Shorter, the 2 and 3 day plans stay closer to the capital. Longer, the 6 and 7 day versions add Soroca and Gagauzia properly, each with its own day.
Book these before you go
- A room in Chișinău for four nights.
- A rental car , you’ll want it for Purcari as much as for Orheiul Vechi and Cricova.

- Your Cricova slot and a Purcari tasting reservation, both go by appointment only.
Day 1: Chișinău
Ștefan cel Mare Central Park, the Cathedral, the Triumphal Arch, then the National Museum of History of Moldova , 50 MDL, for context before everything else. Piața Centrală’s flower market fills the afternoon.
Day 2: Orheiul Vechi and Cricova
An hour to the cliffside cave monastery at Orheiul Vechi, 20 MDL admission, headscarf required for women at the cave church. Then 45 minutes to Cricova for the underground “city” tour, booked ahead, walk-ups are discouraged.
Day 3: Căpriana Monastery, slower
Free, quiet, founded 1429 in the Codru forest, 40 km southwest of the capital. This is deliberately the day you don’t add a second wine cellar; Mileștii Mici holds the actual Guinness record for the world’s largest, but it’s the same tunnel-and-tasting format you already covered at Cricova. Spend the afternoon at the Ethnography Museum or Piața Centrală instead.
Day 4: Transnistria, honestly
Go on a guided day tour to Tiraspol and Bender Fortress. Transnistria is an unrecognised breakaway territory; the US State Department carries it at “Reconsider Travel,” a genuinely higher tier than Moldova’s overall Level 2, driven by Russian troop presence and no consular reach. You’ll get a migration card at the border, roughly 10 hours’ validity for a day trip, keep it safe until you exit. It runs its own currency with no foreign-card ATMs, so carry small cash to exchange. Never photograph checkpoints or military personnel.
Day 5: Purcari, and why it beats a rushed Soroca dash
Here’s the trap most five-day itineraries fall into: bolting Soroca Fortress onto another day because “it’s only one stop.” Soroca is 160 km each way, roughly two and a half hours; round trip that’s five hours of driving before you’ve spent an hour at the fortress, and it doesn’t pair sensibly with anything else on the same day. If you want it, give it its own day, that’s what the 6 day version does.
The better use of a fifth day is Purcari, in the Ștefan Vodă wine region southeast toward the Dniester, about two hours each way. It’s a genuinely different wine landscape from Cricova and Mileștii Mici’s Codru-region caves, terraced vineyards rather than underground tunnels, and it’s the source of Negru de Purcari, the country’s best-known export red. Book a tasting ahead; excursions run from a short 40-minute overview up to a full pairing tasting. Purcari also has an on-site hotel if you’d rather stay out there than drive back.
Is Soroca worth doing on a 5 day trip?
Not as an add-on to something else, no. At 160 km and roughly 2.5 hours each way, it needs its own full day to be worth the drive, and bolting it onto another destination turns both into a rush. On a five-day trip, Purcari’s closer distance and different landscape is the stronger use of the day; save Soroca for a sixth day if your schedule allows it.

Before you go: the short safety note
Moldova proper is safe and open, this isn’t war-zone travel; it sits at US State Department Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” specifically because it borders Ukraine, not because of any direct threat. Southern Moldova-Ukraine crossings can close on short notice from strikes on the Ukrainian side, most recently August 2026, so if your route runs anywhere near that border, check Moldovan Border Police channels first. Transnistria’s own “Reconsider Travel” flag is separate and covered on day four. Off-trail landmine and UXO caution applies in central Moldova, fields, forests, and Dniester riverbanks; keep to marked paths at Orheiul Vechi and Purcari’s vineyard walks alike. Verify all of the above at travel.state.gov close to departure.
One concrete tip: book Purcari and the Transnistria tour on the same day you book Cricova. All three are appointment-only, and none of them has a walk-up fallback if you land without a reservation.
