Bruges: Where to Base Yourself

The real decision in Bruges isn’t which hotel, it’s whether you stay inside the ring canal at all. Roughly 8 million visitors a year pass through as day-trippers, and they all clear out by early evening, so anyone who stays the night gets a genuinely different, quieter city once the coaches leave. Pick a zone based on the kind of evening you want, then check current Bruges hotel and B&B rates for that area.
Around the Markt and the Burg: central and lively
The most convenient base for a first visit, steps from the Belfry, the Stadhuis, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Everything is walkable from here, which matters more than it sounds given how compact the historic core actually is. The trade-off is noise and foot traffic well into the evening during peak season.
South, near Minnewater and the Begijnhof: quiet and closer to the point of staying overnight
A calmer, more residential pocket close to the willow-lined Lake of Love and the walled Begijnhof courtyard. Still an easy walk to the Markt, but noticeably quieter after dark, which is really the entire argument for staying inside the ring canal in the first place.
’t Zand, on the west side: a slightly less touristy pocket
Close to the modern Concertgebouw concert hall and the Saturday market, ’t Zand sits just inside the ring canal but feels a step removed from the postcard core. A reasonable middle ground between the Markt’s energy and Minnewater’s quiet.
Near the station: cheaper, with a short walk to make up for it
Options just outside the ring canal, near Brugge station, run cheaper than anything inside it, at the cost of roughly a 15-20 minute walk into the old town (or a short De Lijn bus ride). Practical for an early train departure, and probably the better call if budget matters more to you than an evening canal-side walk.

One concrete move: whichever zone you pick, choose one inside the ring canal over one outside it, even if it costs more. The point of Bruges is the evening after the day-trippers leave, and you only get that if you’re actually staying the night.
