Bruges Weekend Stay: A 3 Day Plan
Why stay more than a day
Day visitors fill the centre from about 11:00 to 17:00, and the city is calmer in the evening and early morning. An overnight stay is the main value of a multi-day trip, because you see the lit quays and the empty lanes before the crowds arrive. Two to three days is enough to cover the city and one trip out.
Day 1: the centre
Book a Belfry time slot for the early morning, because the climb is 366 steps with no lift and tickets carry a start time. Then walk the Markt and the Burg, where the Stadhuis and the Basilica of the Holy Blood stand. Take a canal boat at EUR 15 for adults, a 30-minute ride from any of five landing stages. Visit the De Halve Maan brewery for the tour at EUR 16, which includes one beer; book ahead, as it is popular. Near closing time, walk to the Begijnhof and Minnewater, which are quieter then. Finish with an evening walk along the lit quays.
Day 2: museums
The Groeningemuseum closes on 11 January 2027 for several years of refurbishment, and the core of its collection moves to BRUSK next door while the works continue, so see it before then if you are visiting early in the year. Add the Church of Our Lady museum, the Sint-Janshospitaal with its Memling works, and the Gruuthusemuseum, which is closed on Wednesdays. The Adornes Estate is open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays. In the warmer months, the Kruisvest ramparts and the Sint-Janshuismolen windmill are a short walk from the centre.
The Musea Brugge Card costs EUR 49 and is valid for 72 hours, with one visit per location. It pays off at about four or five museum visits, and the Groeningemuseum, Gruuthuse, Sint-Janshospitaal, Church of Our Lady museum and Belfry together cost more than EUR 49 for an adult. See the Musea Brugge card page .
Day 3: one trip out
Ghent is 22 to 28 minutes by train. Damme is a short bike ride or paddle-steamer trip, from early April to early November. Another option is Ostend and the Kusttram along the coast. A Flanders Fields day around Ypres takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way via Kortrijk, with the Last Post at 20:00. Treat it as a separate, solemn day and not as a casual add-on.
Winter and 2027 events
From 20 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, Winter Glow runs in the centre, and the Christmas markets run from 20 November to 3 January with an ice rink. During winter, the canal boats run on a rotating basis, and the windmills and the Lamme Goedzak are closed. The Winter Glow page has details.
In 2027, the Bruges Triennial runs from 24 April to 5 September, with a free outdoor trail. The Procession of the Holy Blood takes place on Thursday 6 May 2027, Ascension Day, and is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list.
