Bruges for Couples: Quays, Chocolate, Cafes
A couple’s day in Bruges
Bruges is at its most romantic in the early morning and after the day trippers leave in the evening. The centre is busiest from about 11:00 to 17:00, so plan your quiet moments outside those hours, and consider an overnight stay.
Quays at dusk
The Rozenhoedkaai and the lit quays are the classic spot at dusk. The Bonifacius Bridge and the Groenerei are quieter and shaded. The stone edges of the quays have no fences, so do not step back for a photo.
By boat or carriage
A canal boat ride costs EUR 15 per adult and lasts 30 minutes. For a proposal or a special occasion, you can charter a whole boat. The price is the adult fare times 30, which is EUR 450 at the 2026 tariff, and any of the five boat operators will arrange it. See the Visit Bruges boat page for details.
A horse-drawn carriage costs EUR 70 per carriage for up to five people, so two can share the single price. Carriages board on the western side of the Markt, and they do not run on days above 30 degrees. See the carriage page .
Minnewater and the Begijnhof
Minnewater is a free lake park with swans, and there is no boat hire. Its nickname, the Lake of Love, is a legend, so tell it as one. Next to it, the Begijnhof is free and opens at 07:30. It closes at 18:30 in winter and 20:30 in summer, and visitors are asked to keep silent. The women who live there include Benedictine sisters, so it is a quiet place to walk, and the early hours are the best. See the Begijnhof page .
A quiet museum hour
The Sint-Janshospitaal on Mariastraat holds seven Memling works and the St Ursula Shrine, and it is a calm place for an hour. Entry is EUR 15 for adults and it is closed on Mondays. At the Gruuthusemuseum, look for the oratory that links the palace to the church.
Chocolate and old cafes
The Chocolate Line at Simon Stevinplein 19 and Dumon at Eiermarkt 6 are both established chocolatiers; check opening hours before you go. For a drink, Vlissinghe at Blekersstraat 2 has records dating from 1515. De Garre, at De Garre 1, serves a house tripel with a limit of three glasses per guest, and it does not take reservations.
Evening and winter
From 20 November to 31 January, Winter Glow and an ice rink run in the centre. The lit Burg and Markt are a good evening walk in any season. See the Winter Glow page .
