Attraction Tours Around Arequipa
Arequipa’s attractions are spread between the white-stone centre, the villages on its edge and the desert and altiplano beyond. This page covers the tours that suit a half day or a full day. Prices are in soles (S/) and most tour prices change with the season, so ask what is included.
Ruta del Sillar
The Ruta del Sillar visits the Anashuayco quarries and the Culebrillas canyon in Cerro Colorado district. Sillar is the pale volcanic stone used across the old city. Plan about four hours with transport. Entry to Anashuayco is about S/5 and to the Culebrillas petroglyph canyon about S/5, paid in cash, with the site open roughly 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Tour prices vary and usually leave these fees out. Culebrillas involves a rough walk, so wear sturdy shoes.
Campiña tour: Sabandía and Huasacache
The Molino de Sabandía is about 8 km from the centre, a taxi ride of about S/15. This is a working stone mill dating to 1621, with grounds and animals, and entry is about S/10 to 12, open around 9:00 AM to 5:00 or 6:00 PM. The Mansión del Fundador is at Huasacache, about 9 km out, and a round trip by taxi with waiting is about S/20. It was the home of the city’s founder, Garci Manuel de Carbajal, and is now a museum owned by a bank. Hours are about 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and you should ask on arrival about the entry price.
Salinas y Aguada Blanca reserve
This reserve is reached by a 4x4 day tour, with roughly three hours of driving each way. Laguna de Salinas, at about 4,300 m, is a shallow salt lake listed as a Ramsar wetland. Vicuñas are the most reliable wildlife. Andean and James’s flamingos come and go with the season and the rainfall, and water is most visible from January to March. The lake is for looking at, not for swimming or boating. It is cold and windy, so bring layers and sun protection.
Colca Canyon in a day
The full-day Colca tour is a long haul. Pickup is about 3:00 to 3:30 AM, with breakfast near Chivay and the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint at about 8:30 to 9:30 AM. You are back in Arequipa around 5 to 6 PM. Condor sightings are not guaranteed. Most group tours leave out the boleto turístico, which costs S/70 for foreign adults. Details are on the official Colca tourism site . Our day trips page has the schedule, and a night in the valley is easier on the body.
Santa Catalina in the evening
On Tuesday and Wednesday the monastery stays open until 8:00 PM, so you can fit it around a day tour. Book through the official site .
