Horses are available for the steepest stretch, on a rotation system among local arriero families with a rider weight limit around 90kg; roughly 70 percent of visitors use one for part of the climb, and the site has drawn genuine overtourism concern in recent years. Tip: book ahead, especially for Machu Picchu and anything touching the Inca Trail, and treat Rainbow Mountain’s altitude the same way you’d treat any 5,000m ascent, since a horse for part of the climb doesn’t remove the altitude risk for the rest of it.
