Athens for Families: Parks, Zoo, Beach
Athens rewards families who split the day between the ancient sites and something with room to run, and the city’s real zoo is genuinely worth its own separate half-day trip.
Attica Zoological Park
The zoo sits in Spata, roughly 20km east of central Athens near the airport, and holds over 2,000 animals across some 350 species, considerably more than a passing mention would ever suggest. Its dolphins were moved to Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida in May 2025, so plan the visit around its current animal collection rather than a dolphin show. Attica Zoological Park’s own site carries current hours and prices. Public transport out to Spata involves at least one change, so a taxi or a rental car is usually the more practical option for a family traveling with young kids and stroller gear.
The Acropolis, briefly, for kids
The Acropolis itself is climbable for most kids and genuinely striking up close; keep the visit short and timed around the site’s own booking system rather than treating it as an all-morning stop, since a bored child on a 30 euro ticket is worse than a shorter, well-timed visit.
National Archaeological Museum
The museum’s headline pieces are Mycenaean, the gold funeral masks from Grave Circle A including the Mask of Agamemnon, a strong hook for kids interested in myths and treasure rather than pottery.
Panathenaic Stadium
Built for the first modern Olympics in 1896, entry is 10 euro general and 5 euro reduced, current since October 2025, sold only on-site; the marble seating and running track give kids plenty of room to move around after a morning spent in museums.
National Garden and the Riviera beaches
The free National Garden has playgrounds and a small menagerie, while Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Alimos, all reachable by tram, cover the beach side of a family trip with calm, shallow sections suited to younger kids.
Carry water, sunscreen and hats regardless of season, and shift outdoor time to morning or late afternoon in summer.
