A Multi-Day Cologne Itinerary
Cologne on its own is realistically a one- to two-day city, so a multi-day trip works best built as the city core plus one or two day trips out, rather than stretching the same sights over extra days.
Day 1: the cathedral and the Old Town
Start at Kölner Dom, where sightseeing entry has cost €12 (€6 reduced) since 1 July 2026; full terms including the free-entry exceptions are on koelner-dom.de . Climb the south tower (€8 / €4) if the weather’s clear, then walk the Altstadt: Alter Markt, Groß St. Martin and Heumarkt. Close the day with Kölsch and a Halve Hahn at a traditional Brauhaus like Früh am Dom or Päffgen.
Day 2: museums and the riverfront
Spend the morning at Museum Ludwig (€19.80 / €13.50 reduced) for its Picasso and Pop Art holdings, or the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum (€8 to €13 depending on the current exhibition). In the afternoon, walk the Rheinboulevard in Deutz for the classic Dom-and-river view, then, if it’s between mid-March and early November, cross back over on the Kölner Seilbahn cable car (€5.50 one way / €9.50 return). A 1-hour Rhine cruise from Frankenwerft rounds out the riverfront day.
Day 3: choose a day trip
Brühl (15 to 20 minutes by RE5/RB26/RB48) pairs Schloss Augustusburg and Falkenlust; treat Phantasialand as a separate full day if that’s the priority, since the palaces and the theme park don’t combine well in one visit. Alternatively, Bonn (20 to 26 minutes by RE/RB) covers Beethoven-Haus (around €10) and the free Haus der Geschichte, or Aachen (33 to 36 minutes by ICE, 60 to 70 by regional RE1/RE9) offers the UNESCO-listed cathedral with Charlemagne’s throne.
Day 4 (optional): a rival city or the hills
Add Düsseldorf (20 to 25 minutes) for an Altstadt and MedienHafen half-day, or Königswinter and the Drachenfels (35 to 50 minutes plus a short climb or the cog railway) for the Siebengebirge hills south of the city.
