Cologne rewards a mix of landmark, museum and brauhaus time rather than a single checklist of sights. Anchor a first visit around the cathedral, one of the two big art museums, and the riverfront, then fill the gaps with food and a view.
Cologne Cathedral
Since 1 July 2026, sightseeing entry to Kölner Dom costs €12 for adults and €6 reduced; the fee funds upkeep of the Gothic building and applies during tourist visiting hours. Worship, private prayer, candle-lighting and visits by under-14s or severely disabled guests with a companion stay free, so check the current fee and free-entry conditions on koelner-dom.de before you go. The south tower climb (533 steps, no lift) is €8 regular / €4 reduced, the Treasury is €8 / €4, and a combined tower-and-treasury ticket is €12 / €6.
A ticket for the Rhine river cruise from Frankenwerft pier is worth booking ahead in summer, since the 1-hour panorama cruises past the cathedral and the Rheinauhafen crane houses sell out on warm afternoons.
Museums
Museum Ludwig holds one of the largest Picasso collections outside Spain plus major Pop Art and Russian avant-garde works; adult admission is €19.80, reduced €13.50, free under 18. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum runs €8 to €13 depending on the current special exhibition. The Roman-Germanic Museum’s own building on Roncalliplatz stays closed for structural repairs into 2030, but its Roman mosaics and grave goods are on show at the Belgisches Haus, Cäcilienstraße 46 , a short walk from Neumarkt.
Riverfront and views
The Rheinboulevard steps in Deutz give the classic postcard view of the Dom across the water, free at any hour. From mid-March to early November, the Kölner Seilbahn cable car crosses the Rhine between the zoo and Rheinpark for €5.50 one way or €9.50 return per adult; it does not run in winter.
Food and beer culture
A Brauhaus visit belongs on any activities list: order a Kölsch at Früh am Dom, Päffgen or Gaffel and try a Halve Hahn, the rye roll with aged Gouda that locals treat as a proper snack rather than a starter. A KVB day ticket for public transport covers trams, buses and the U-Bahn for €8.40 (single fare €3.50), which usually beats paying per ride if you plan more than two trips.
Practical tips
Buy the Dom sightseeing ticket online in advance during peak season to skip the queue at Roncalliplatz.
