Cologne itself is a one- to two-day city, which makes it a strong base for reaching several genuinely different towns without changing hotels. A real day trip should get you out of the city center; the cathedral and the Chocolate Museum belong on a sightseeing list, not this one.
Brühl: palaces and Phantasialand
Regional trains RE5, RB26 or RB48 reach Brühl in 15 to 20 minutes. Schloss Augustusburg and the Falkenlust hunting lodge form a UNESCO World Heritage Rococo pairing by Balthasar Neumann; note the palaces close Mondays and interiors are seen on timed guided visits. Phantasialand, the theme park in Brühl, is a separate full day on its own and does not combine well with the palaces in one visit; its real themed lands include Berlin, Mystery, Klugheim, Mexico, China Town, Deep in Africa, Fantasy and Rookburgh. Bonn: Beethoven’s city
Bonn is 20 to 26 minutes away by RE or RB train, roughly €8 to €9 under the Rheinlandtarif. Beethoven-Haus, the composer’s birthplace, charges around €10; the Museumsmeile along the same stretch includes the free Haus der Geschichte, covering postwar German history. The Rhine promenade and Bonner Münster round out a walkable afternoon.
Aachen: Charlemagne’s capital
Aachen is 33 to 36 minutes by ICE or 60 to 70 minutes by regional RE1/RE9. Aachen Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, holds Charlemagne’s marble throne and the Shrine of Charlemagne; the cathedral itself is free to view, with a small fee for the guided throne-room and treasury tour. Aachener Printen gingerbread bakeries make an easy souvenir stop near the cathedral.
Düsseldorf and the Siebengebirge
Düsseldorf is 20 to 25 minutes by ICE or RE for a rival-city half-day: the Altstadt’s brewery pubs, Königsallee shopping and the Frank Gehry buildings at MedienHafen. For hills and a castle ruin, Königswinter and the Drachenfels are 35 to 50 minutes away by train plus a short walk or the cog railway up.
Getting there
A Deutschland-Ticket at €63 a month covers regional trains nationwide if you’re taking more than one or two of these trips; otherwise buy single Rheinlandtarif fares per journey.
