A Couple's Weekend in Vancouver
Sunset over English Bay is free, and it sets the tone for how a weekend for two can work in Vancouver: a handful of no-cost moments anchoring a couple of paid ones worth booking ahead.
Start with the water, for free
Walk or cycle the Stanley Park seawall toward English Bay in the evening; the light off the water and the mountain backdrop is the same view every sunset cruise sells, minus the ticket. If you’d rather be on the water than beside it, a small-group sunset sail is a real option in season. Vancouver by Sea runs seasonal sunset cruises from Jericho Sailing Centre between May and September, and Sea Dragon Charters sails a two-hour sunset trip from Horseshoe Bay with something bubbly included.
From the air
A scenic flight is the other way to see the coastline together. Harbour Air runs 20 to 45 minute flightseeing tours over the city, the Lions Gate Bridge, and the coastal mountains for around $129 to $229 CAD per person, a different product from its point-to-point Victoria service and worth booking a specific tour slot rather than a one-way ticket. Clear mornings tend to give the steadiest views, so an early slot is usually the better choice over a late afternoon one.
Dinner and a show
Yaletown, Gastown, and Granville Island all hold dinner options with a water view if you book a table facing the right direction, and Granville Island’s market stalls make a good pre-dinner wander at dusk. Between June and September, Bard on the Beach stages Shakespeare in open-sided tents at Vanier Park with English Bay behind the performers, a good pairing with an early dinner nearby.
On the water, longer
For an outing with more time on the water, Salish Sea whale watching tours run three to five hours from Granville Island or Steveston and cost roughly $175 to $230 CAD per person, with orcas, humpbacks, and sea lions the usual sightings between spring and autumn. The Stanley Park horse-drawn carriage tour is a slower, land-based alternative between late February and mid-December, no reservation required.
Book a harbour-view room through Booking.com if you want the view to continue after dinner, and check the Vancouver activities overview for how these pair with the rest of the city. Whichever combination you pick, reserve the boat or the dinner table before the flight or the carriage; the fixed-schedule bookings fill first, especially on summer weekends when the sunset sailings sell out days ahead.
