Three Vancouver Multi-Day Trip Routes
Staying more than one night out of Vancouver opens up three regions that a single day trip can only skim. Each one suits a different pace of travel.
Whistler and the Sea to Sky Highway (2 to 3 nights)
Highway 99 north climbs past Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief before reaching Whistler Village, roughly two hours from downtown. A Sea to Sky Gondola stop near Squamish on the way up costs $73.95 CAD booked online, $81.95 CAD at the gate, and adds a scenic break to the drive. Whistler itself runs on lift passes in winter and mountain-bike park tickets in summer, and accommodation books up early in both seasons.
Vancouver Island (3 to 5 nights)
BC Ferries crosses from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay in about 95 minutes, with foot passenger fares around $19 to $22 CAD and vehicle fares closer to $60 to $80 CAD; reserving a spot ahead is worth doing between June and September. From Victoria, the route continues to Butchart Gardens, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve’s rugged coastline, and Tofino for surfing or whale watching. Harbour Air floatplanes cover the Vancouver to Victoria leg in about 35 minutes, with fares from roughly $99 CAD one way downtown to downtown if booked well ahead.
Sunshine Coast (2 to 4 nights)
A separate ferry crossing reaches the Sunshine Coast, a peninsula of small villages and beaches that stays quieter than either of the routes above. Gibsons has waterfront restaurants and a small arts scene, and old-growth forest trails run through Tetrahedron Provincial Park. Ferry schedules here are fixed rather than frequent, so check sailing times before building a day around one. A car makes far more difference on this route than on the other two, since the villages sit spread out along the coast road with limited bus service between them.
Whichever region you pick, TransLink’s $2.85 CAD Compass fare or $12.55 CAD DayPass covers getting back and forth from the ferry terminals within Vancouver itself, and it’s worth budgeting an extra hour on either end of a ferry crossing for terminal lines during peak summer weekends. A self-drive rental through DiscoverCars makes the most sense for the Sunshine Coast or Whistler routes, where public transit thins out fast, while a guided Victoria and Butchart Gardens package on Viator removes the ferry logistics entirely. For a single-day version of any of these, the day trips guide breaks the same three regions down into shorter visits.
