Is the Museumsinsel day pass worth 24 euros? Yes for the Neues Museum, not if the whole plan was built around the Pergamon Altar, because that plan is currently impossible. The Pergamonmuseum has been fully closed since October 2023; the north wing, including the Pergamon Altar and the Great Frieze, doesn’t reopen until 4 June 2027, and the south wing housing the Ishtar Gate stays closed until roughly 2037. What the pass still buys: the Neues Museum’s Nefertiti bust, the Alte Nationalgalerie’s 19th-century painting collection, the Altes Museum’s classical antiquities, the Bode Museum’s Byzantine and medieval sculpture, and a separate Pergamon panorama installation that fills part of the gap.

Is the Pergamon Museum open in 2026?
No. It has been fully closed since 23 October 2023 for its first major renovation in over 90 years. The north wing, including the Pergamon Altar, reopens 4 June 2027. The south wing, home to the Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way of Babylon, stays closed until roughly 2037. Anyone telling you otherwise is working from old information.
What replaced the Pergamon in the meantime?
“Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama,” a separate building across the water showing a 360-degree Yadegar Asisi reconstruction of ancient Pergamon alongside around 80 original sculptures pulled from the closed collection. It’s bundled into the Museum Island day pass rather than sold as an extra, and it’s the closest thing to a Pergamon fix available before 2027.
Which of the four open museums actually earns a visit?
The Neues Museum, without much competition. David Chipperfield’s restoration left bomb-damaged walls standing next to rebuilt sections, and the Nefertiti bust upstairs looks smaller and better preserved in person than any photo suggests. Give it two hours. The Alte Nationalgalerie’s Caspar David Friedrich room is the second stop if a third museum fits your day.

S-Bahn lines S3, S5, S7 and S9 stop at Hackescher Markt, five minutes from the island; U2 stops at Klosterstrasse. Validate your ticket before boarding: Berlin’s transit runs on an honour system with real spot checks and a flat fine for anyone caught without one.
