Berlin Day Trips: 4 Day Itinerary
Four days from a Berlin base, four separate trips: Potsdam and Sanssouci, the Sachsenhausen memorial, a full day in the Spreewald’s canals, and Dresden’s rebuilt Baroque core as the longest ride of the four. This keeps the same spine as the shorter versions of this itinerary and simply extends it by a day; nothing about days one through three changes. Day 1: Potsdam and Sanssouci
Regional trains from Berlin Hauptbahnhof reach Potsdam Hbf in about 25 minutes, or run one stop further to Potsdam Park Sanssouci, right at the park entrance, covered by an ABC zone fare of around 5 euros single or 11.40 euros for the day. Sanssouci Palace single entry costs 14 euros adult, 10 euros reduced, with a fixed entry time set at purchase; the sanssouci+ ticket covering every open palace on the grounds that day runs 22 euros adult, 17 euros reduced, or 49 euros for a family ticket. The gardens are free and open regardless of what’s ticketed inside, so a delayed train still leaves a full afternoon of grounds to explore.
Day 2: Sachsenhausen
The RB regional train from Berlin to Oranienburg takes 35 to 45 minutes, then a 20-minute walk or Bus 804 to the Gedenkstätte stop, for roughly 4 euros one way or about 10 euros on an ABC day ticket. Entry is free, with a suggested 3 euro donation. Give this a real three to four hours; it’s a former concentration camp memorial, and rushing it defeats the point of going at all. The memorial’s own site has current hours and walking directions.
Day 3: The Spreewald
Direct RE2, RE7 or RE20 trains reach Lübbenau in roughly an hour to 77 minutes, then a 15 to 20-minute walk to the punting docks. This is the one day that has nothing to do with Berlin’s history, a UNESCO biosphere reserve of canals punted in flat-bottomed boats, home to the Sorbian and Wendish minority. Tours start around 11 euros for a two-hour English-guided route, departing roughly hourly in summer.
Day 4: Dresden
Trains from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Dresden take around two hours, with the fastest services closer to 90 minutes and average journeys nearer two, so check the specific departure rather than assuming the shortest option. Advance Super Saver fares run from roughly 10 to 15 euros; standard Sparpreis tickets start around 18 euros, both far cheaper than a walk-up ticket bought the same day. Dresden’s old town, rebuilt after WWII firebombing devastated it, centers on the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger Palace complex, and the Semperoper opera house, and it genuinely rewards the full day this itinerary gives it rather than a half-day detour.
Is Dresden worth a day trip from Berlin?
Yes, if you treat it as a full day rather than an add-on. The round trip alone takes roughly four hours, so a rushed half day in Dresden leaves barely enough time to see the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger before turning back. Book an early outbound train and a late return, and the old town earns every hour spent there.
Do you need to book Dresden train tickets ahead of time?
Not mandatory the way Sanssouci is, but it pays to book anyway. Advance Super Saver fares run roughly half the price of a same-day ticket, and the cheapest tier sells out train by train as the departure date gets closer. Booking a week or two out locks in both the lower fare and a specific seat.
