Zanzibar 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, not a country of its own, and three days is Stone Town plus exactly one beach base, not a tour of the whole archipelago. Currency is the Tanzanian shilling, USD covers most tourist transactions, and the island is roughly 99% Muslim, so shoulders and knees stay covered off the beach. The honest version: a day in Stone Town, a spice tour with a Jozani Forest stop on the transfer out, then one full beach day, tide table permitting. Anyone promising Nungwi and Paje and Prison Island in three days is skipping the drive times.
Zanzibar in 3 Days: The Route That Actually Fits
Three days buys Stone Town’s core sights, a spice tour, one red colobus stop at Jozani, and one real beach day, not the north-and-east combo some blogs sketch out. Book these before you go: a licensed spice tour with a Jozani add-on, and your beach room, since the June-October and December-February windows sell out the good mid-range places first.
Day 1: Stone Town, Not the Fake Palace Tours
Morning. Land at Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ), or take the roughly 1h45 Azam Marine catamaran over from Dar es Salaam, and settle into Stone Town. The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), built by Omani Arabs between 1698 and 1701, is genuinely free beyond the odd donation ask at the gate, and fifteen to sixty minutes covers it. Walk the alleys after, spotting the carved wooden doors where Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influence stack on top of each other.
Midday. Eat local: urojo, the tangy mango and tamarind soup with bhajia, or a plate of pilau runs a few thousand shillings at a street stall, a fraction of a resort menu.
Afternoon. The former slave market and Christ Church Cathedral, built in 1879 on the site of East Africa’s last major open slave-trading market, is a sobering stop, not a photo op. Entry, covering the cathedral, memorial, and small museum, runs about USD 5. Follow with the Freddie Mercury house in Shangani, USD 10 adult / USD 6 child, open 10am-6pm, a low-key hour rather than an afternoon.
Evening. Forodhani Gardens night market opens around 6pm on the waterfront: Zanzibar pizza, mishkaki skewers, fresh seafood, sugarcane juice, mostly TZS 4,000-9,000 per item. TZS 20,000-30,000 (roughly USD 8-12) buys a generous sampling meal, cash only in practice.
Is the House of Wonders Open in 2026?
No. Stone Town’s largest historic building partially collapsed in 2020 and has been under restoration since, with imported structural columns on 6-7 month shipping timelines pushing reopening toward late 2026. Admire it from Forodhani Gardens, where the exterior is the actual draw right now, and skip any tour claiming you can walk through it.
Day 2: Spice Tour, Jozani Stop, Transfer to the Beach
Morning. A half day spice tour is worth doing on a first Zanzibar trip: working plantations growing cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and black pepper, ending with fresh fruit. Prices run roughly USD 10-40 depending on operator, group size, and whether lunch and transport are included, so confirm inclusions before comparing headline numbers.
Midday, on the way out. Route your transfer through Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, the only place to see the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a species found nowhere else on earth. Arrive as close to opening as the transfer allows since the mid-morning bus-tour crowd pushes the colobus troops higher into the canopy and out of easy view. Entry runs roughly USD 10 including a guide, though sources on the exact fee conflict, so treat that as an estimate, not a quote.
Afternoon. Continue to your beach base. East to Paje or Jambiani (roughly 1-1.5 hours from Stone Town) sits closest to Jozani and is the kitesurfing coast, but the tides swing 300m-1km, so swimming means checking a tide table, not walking straight into the water. North to Nungwi or Kendwa (roughly 1.25-2 hours) trades that Jozani-adjacency for calmer tides and a swim window that runs most of the day. Pick one, not both. This itinerary assumes east, since it pairs naturally with the Jozani stop; swap the drive time and skip ahead to the north-coast notes in our 4 day itinerary if Nungwi is the plan instead.
Evening. Settle in and eat beachside. Grilled fish, octopus, and prawns are the reliable order almost anywhere along this coast, priced well under resort-restaurant rates at the smaller beach grills.
Day 3: The Beach Day, Tide Table First
Morning. Check the tide schedule before you plan anything. On the east coast, swimming works reliably within about two hours either side of high tide; outside that window the sea recedes 300m-1km, exposing sandbanks and tidal pools that are genuinely good for a reef walk and photos, just not a swim. Paje specifically has consistent wind and a wide shallow lagoon, so a first kitesurfing lesson is a reasonable way to fill a low-tide morning rather than fighting it.
Afternoon. Swim at high tide, then watch the seaweed farming that’s still a real local livelihood here, not a staged photo-op, as women work the lines at low tide. If Jambiani over Paje, the pace is quieter with fewer kite schools and a bit more space on the sand.
Evening. One splurge worth booking ahead: the Rock Restaurant at Michamvi Pingwe, reachable on foot at low tide or by boat at high tide, mains roughly USD 25-45 and a full meal with drinks commonly USD 60-90 per person. It’s priced for the setting as much as the food, so treat it as an occasion, not a standard dinner.
Do You Need a Second Day Trip Instead of the Beach Day?
Three days doesn’t comfortably fit both a beach day and Mnemba Atoll or Prison Island on top of Stone Town and Jozani; the drive and boat times eat the day. Do You Need the USD 44 ZIC Insurance?
Yes. Since late 2024, Zanzibar has required every foreign visitor to buy Zanzibar Insurance Corporation travel cover, roughly USD 44, on top of the entry visa (commonly USD 50, sometimes USD 100 for US passport holders, confirm the current fee on the official Zanzibar tourism site ). A standard travel insurance policy from home does not satisfy this, only ZIC’s own policy does, so check the current process on the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism site before you fly.
Is Zanzibar Safe Right Now?
The US State Department raised Tanzania to Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in October 2025 after disputed mainland elections and unrest around Dar es Salaam. Zanzibar itself was reported calm throughout, with tourism operating normally. The rating is issued at the Tanzania-country level, since there is no separate Zanzibar advisory, so check the current wording before booking. This moves.
Two everyday cautions matter more day to day: touts on the Stone Town waterfront selling cut-price dhow trips or attaching themselves as unrequested guides (a flat no thank you works fine), and malaria, for which chemoprophylaxis is recommended archipelago-wide, so talk to a travel clinic 4-6 weeks out.

One night in Stone Town, two on the beach, is the practical split here since the transfer alone eats over an hour each way.
