Zanzibar 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, not a country of its own, and two days here is Stone Town plus a small taste of the coast, not a tour of the archipelago. Anyone selling you a 2 day plan that also fits Nungwi, Jozani, and Mnemba Atoll is lying about drive times. The honest version: a full day in Stone Town (skip the House of Wonders, it is closed), a half day spice tour, and either a second Stone Town day or a short beach run. Currency is the Tanzanian shilling, USD works in most tourist transactions, and Zanzibar is roughly 99% Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees off the beach.
Zanzibar in 2 Days: The Route That Actually Fits
This is Zanzibar’s shortest workable itinerary: one day on Stone Town’s core sights, one day split between a spice tour and either more of the old town or a beach afternoon. Book these before you go: a licensed spice tour (street touts sell the same tour with a longer gift-shop stop bolted on) and your Stone Town room, since June-October and December-February fill up fast.
Day 1: Stone Town, Skip the Fake Palace Tours
Morning. Land at Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ), or take the roughly 1h45 Azam Marine catamaran over from Dar es Salaam, and settle into Stone Town. Start at the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), built by Omani Arabs between 1698 and 1701, genuinely free to enter beyond the odd donation ask at the gate. Fifteen to sixty minutes covers it. Walk the narrow alleys, spotting the carved wooden doors that mark Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influence layered on top of each other.
Midday. Lunch local: urojo (the tangy mango and tamarind soup with bhajia) or a plate of pilau runs a few thousand shillings at a street stall, a fraction of a resort menu price.
Afternoon. Visit the former slave market and Christ Church Cathedral, built in 1879 on the site of East Africa’s last major open slave-trading market. Entry, covering the cathedral, memorial, and small museum, runs about USD 5. Treat it as the sobering historical stop it is, not a quick photo. Follow with the Freddie Mercury house in Shangani, USD 10 adult / USD 6 child, open 10am-6pm, a low-key hour, not an afternoon commitment.
Evening. Forodhani Gardens night market opens around 6pm on the waterfront: Zanzibar pizza, mishkaki skewers, fresh seafood, and sugarcane juice, mostly TZS 4,000-9,000 per item. TZS 20,000-30,000 (roughly USD 8-12) buys a generous sampling meal, cash only in practice.
Is the House of Wonders Open in 2026?
No. Stone Town’s largest historic building partially collapsed in 2020 and has been under restoration since, with imported structural columns on 6-7 month shipping timelines pushing reopening toward late 2026. Skip any tour claiming to walk you through it and admire it from Forodhani Gardens instead, where the exterior is the actual draw right now.
Day 2: Spice Tour, Then Pick Your Ending
Morning. A half day spice tour is worth the money on a first Zanzibar trip: working plantations growing cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and black pepper, ending with fresh fruit. Prices run roughly USD 10-40 depending on operator, group size, and whether lunch and transport are included, so confirm inclusions before you book rather than comparing headline numbers.
Afternoon, if this really is your whole trip. Take a Prison Island half day boat trip from Stone Town, about 20 minutes each way, to see the Aldabra giant tortoises brought over from Seychelles in 1919. Close with a second pass through Stone Town’s alleys or a sunset from Forodhani.
Afternoon, if day 3 is a beach day for you. Skip Prison Island and transfer instead: north to Nungwi or Kendwa (roughly 1.25-2 hours, calmer tides, swimmable most of the day) or east to Paje or Jambiani (roughly 1-1.5 hours, kitesurfing country, but tides swing 300m-1km so swimming means timing the tide table). Pick one coast, not both, and carry on with our 4 day or 6 day itinerary from there.
Tourist Traps to Actually Skip
- Street touts on the Stone Town waterfront selling cut-price dhow sunset trips: overcrowded, no life vests, a documented scam pattern. Book through your hotel or a reviewed operator instead.
- Self-appointed “guides” who attach themselves outside the Old Fort or cathedral, then demand a fee at the end. A flat, unexplained no thank you works fine, you owe them nothing.
- Any spice tour priced far below the roughly USD 10-40 range, it usually means a longer gift-shop stop or a staged dance number added on.
- Paying to “enter” the House of Wonders. It is closed. Anyone selling that ticket is selling you nothing.

Do You Need the USD 44 ZIC Insurance?
Yes. Since late 2024, Zanzibar has required every foreign visitor to buy Zanzibar Insurance Corporation travel cover, roughly USD 44, on top of the entry visa (commonly USD 50, sometimes USD 100 for US passport holders, confirm the current fee on the official Zanzibar tourism site ). A standard travel insurance policy from home does not satisfy this, only ZIC’s own policy does, so check the current process on the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism site before you fly.
Is Zanzibar Safe Right Now?
The US State Department raised Tanzania to Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in October 2025 after disputed mainland elections and unrest around Dar es Salaam. Zanzibar itself was reported calm throughout, with tourism operating normally. The rating is issued at the Tanzania-country level, since there is no separate Zanzibar advisory, so check the current wording before booking. This moves.
Two everyday cautions matter more day to day: the touts above, and malaria. Chemoprophylaxis is recommended archipelago-wide, so talk to a travel clinic 4-6 weeks out rather than treating it as optional.
Where to Stay for Just 2 Days
Stone Town, both nights, is the practical call on a 2 day trip since the beach transfer alone eats 1-2 hours each way. Check Stone Town rates on Booking.com and book ahead for the June-October and December-February peak windows, when the good mid-range rooms sell out first.
