Trondheim: Olavsfest and the Calendar

Trondheim’s calendar has one clearly dominant event tied directly to the cathedral’s own history, plus a couple of smaller festivals worth knowing about if the dates happen to line up with a trip.
Olavsfestdagene: the city’s marquee week
Held around Olsok (St. Olav’s Day, 29 July, marking his death at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030), Olavsfestdagene runs 28 July-3 August 2026, with roughly 300 events across concerts, medieval markets, pilgrim walks, and exhibitions centered on Nidaros Cathedral and its courtyard. It’s the single best week to be in Trondheim if a church-and-culture festival appeals, and also the busiest and priciest, so book accommodation well ahead if your trip lands anywhere near it.
Pstereo: central Norway’s biggest music festival
Held annually in August at Marinen, the green space beside the Nidelva next to the cathedral and Kristiansten Fortress, Pstereo has run since 2007 and focuses on pop, rock, and electronica. It’s a different crowd and register from Olavsfestdagene, worth checking dates for if music is more the draw than history.
Trondheim Jazz Festival: a spring fixture since 1979
Running annually in spring, Jazzfest Trondheim is a collaboration among local jazz organizations, venues, and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, and it’s been going since 1979. It’s a smaller, quieter event than either of the summer festivals, worth a look if a spring visit is on the table.
The rest of the year: no elevated risk, just Sunday closures
Norway carries a US State Department Level 1 rating (last reviewed 6 July 2026) and no elevated UK FCDO warning, so there’s no advisory-level reason to avoid any particular season. The real practical constraint outside festival weeks is the standard Sunday closure of shops and Vinmonopolet, and shorter daylight if visiting in winter (roughly 4-5 hours around the December solstice).
