Riyadh 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Travel advisory: Saudi Arabia is under a US State Department Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory, tied to Iranian and Houthi drone-and-missile risk in the regional conflict underway since February 2026, and the UK FCDO now advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh Province itself, plus all travel within 10km of the Yemen border. No strike has been confirmed inside Riyadh city, this is a risk advisory, not a report of an attack, but it’s a live, evolving situation. Check the current US State Department or UK FCDO advisory before booking anything, and treat this as a plan for when it’s safe to go.

Day 1: Old and Modern Riyadh
Start at Masmak Fortress, built around 1865 and the site of Ibn Saud’s 14 January 1902 raid that recaptured Riyadh, free entry, closed Fridays, allow 45 minutes to an hour. Walk next door to Souq Al Zal, Riyadh’s oldest market, dating to 1901, for antiques and Bedouin jewelry. Cross to the National Museum (free, closed Sundays) next to Murabba Palace for the historical context before the afternoon’s modern skyline.
In the afternoon, head to Olaya for the Kingdom Centre Sky Bridge, the 65-meter glass skywalk on the 99th floor, roughly SAR 138, and Al Faisaliyah’s golden globe nearby. Have dinner at Bujairi Terrace or in Olaya itself.
Day 2: Diriyah
Spend the day at At-Turaif District in ad-Dir’iyah, Saudi Arabia’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site (ref. 1329, inscribed 2010), the mud-brick Najdi capital of the First Saudi State, founded 1727. Book the Diriyah Access Pass through the official site, not a reseller. Have lunch or dinner at Bujairi Terrace next door, Takya or Najd Village for traditional kabsa and jareesh. If time allows before your flight, catch sunset at Wadi Namar’s lake and waterfall on the way back.

The Riyadh Metro’s Blue Line covers Olaya and KAFD directly; Careem or Uber gets you to Masmak’s old town and out to Diriyah for whatever the metro doesn’t reach.
The honest verdict: two days covers the two things Riyadh does that nowhere else in the Gulf does, the old-town history and At-Turaif, skip the desert day trips entirely if you’re this tight on time.
