Zermatt 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Four days is our 3-day plan plus Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the superlative lift most 2 and 3 day trips skip for time. If you’d rather add a rest day or the Gorner Gorge instead of a straight fourth lift day, our 5-day itinerary works that in.

Day 1: Arrival and the free half of Zermatt
There’s no driving into the village itself. Arrive by train, or park at Täsch and take the Zermatt Shuttle the last 12 minutes for CHF 8.60 one-way. Walk to Kirchbrücke for the free Matterhorn view, then Hinterdorf’s blackened 17th-century barns. Zermatt sits at 1,620m, cooler than the valley floor once the sun drops, so pack a real layer.
Day 2: Gornergrat, the day this trip is built around
Take the earliest departure available. The Matterhorn clouds over most afternoons, and the 3,089m summit is the single most photographed angle in the valley. A return runs CHF 96 winter, CHF 132 summer; check the full fare table first. Allow two hours up top and eat lunch at the Kulmhotel Gornergrat.
Day 3: Sunnegga and the Five Lakes Walk
The Sunnegga funicular reaches 2,288m in four minutes, connecting to the Fünfseenweg, an easy 2.5-hour, 9.8km walk to Stellisee for the still-water Matterhorn reflection. A Sunnegga return runs roughly CHF 25, the best value activity in Zermatt by a wide margin.
Day 4: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the superlative lift
The multi-stage cable car via Furi and Trockener Steg reaches 3,883m, Europe’s highest cable car station, 41m higher than Chamonix’s Aiguille du Midi. A return runs CHF 104 winter, CHF 120 shoulder season, CHF 132 peak summer, and includes the Glacier Palace ice cave; see the full current fare table direct from the operator. Ascend slowly: the altitude jump can cause real shortness of breath even in fit visitors, and children under 3 are barred from the final stage for exactly that reason.
Is Glacier Paradise worth doing on top of Gornergrat, or should you pick one? Worth it if you have four or more days; on a shorter trip, pick Gornergrat for the actual Matterhorn photo and skip Glacier Paradise’s higher altitude and higher price unless the glacier ice cave and the Cervinia connection specifically interest you.
Can you cross into Italy from the summit station? Yes, the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing continues to Cervinia via Testa Grigia, the highest cable car border crossing in the Alps, one-way from CHF 127.50. Bring a passport even though nobody checks it at 3,480m, and treat it as its own full day, not an add-on to this one.

Check the weather forecast each evening and shift your Gornergrat or Glacier Paradise day earlier if a clear morning is forecast; a fixed schedule matters less than good visibility.
