Best Hoi An Day Trips: 4 Real Options

Hoi An itself has no airport and no train station, so every day trip starts with a car, and most of the genuinely good ones are within an hour or two. Here are the four worth planning around, ranked by how much they add to a trip that’s already mostly about the old town.

- My Son Sanctuary. UNESCO-listed in 1999 , a separate site from Hoi An’s own Ancient Town listing, this is a complex of Cham Hindu temple ruins dating from the 4th to 13th centuries. Much of it was destroyed by US bombing over a single week in August 1969, and the craters are still visible, which explains why so much of the site is rubble rather than intact towers. Book a sunrise tour to get there ahead of the heat and the tour buses.
- Da Nang: Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, My Khe Beach, the Dragon Bridge. Five marble and limestone hills with cave pagodas and a real stair climb make up the Marble Mountains; a cable car up to Ba Na Hills ends at the Golden Bridge, the giant stone-hand structure that opened in 2018, unapologetically manufactured spectacle and still worth seeing once. My Khe Beach and the fire-breathing Dragon Bridge round out a full day. Book a Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge day trip rather than assembling transport and cable-car tickets separately.
- Hue, the former imperial capital. Roughly 3-3.5 hours north via the scenic Hai Van Pass, home to the Citadel, the Imperial City, and the royal tombs, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It’s a long day trip and a better overnight if your schedule allows it.
- The Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham). A marine UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, reached by boat, with snorkeling and day trips that depend on season and sea conditions. Check ahead rather than assuming a boat runs every day of your visit.
Is My Son worth it if you’ve already seen Angkor or similar ruins elsewhere in the region?
Yes, on its own terms. My Son is a different civilisation (Cham, Hindu) and a much smaller, more intimate site than Angkor, closer to a couple of hours of genuinely quiet ruins than a full-day monument complex. The bombing damage also makes it a different kind of visit: part archaeology, part 20th-century history.
