Be upfront about what Hoi An is: flat, coastal, and riverine, not mountainous, sitting on the Thu Bon river a short drive from the UNESCO-listed Ancient Town . There’s no rainforest trekking here, but there’s a real stretch of beach, working farmland, and canal country worth a slow afternoon.

  1. An Bang Beach. A few kilometres from the old town, this is the better-kept of Hoi An’s two main beaches, with cafes doing sunbeds and cold drinks well enough that you don’t need a resort day pass.
  2. Cua Dai Beach, honestly: erosion has visibly reshaped this stretch in recent years, so temper expectations against older photos you may have seen. It’s still a beach, just a smaller one than it used to be.
  3. Tra Que herb village, a working organic farming settlement a short bike ride north of the old town. Join a session in the plots rather than just walking through; it’s more interesting with your hands in the soil.
  4. The Cam Thanh water-coconut canals, on basket boat. The mass-market group version, where an operator spins the boat for photos over a speaker, is a manufactured add-on rather than tradition; book a quieter, private basket-boat trip instead, covering the same waterways at a fraction of the noise.
  5. Cycling the rice paddies on the back lanes south of the old town, flat and easy, past working farmland rather than a manicured park version of it.
  6. A sunrise on the Thu Bon river, either from a riverside cafe or from the water itself, before the day’s boat traffic and tour groups pick up.

Is Hoi An good for outdoor activities beyond the beach?

Yes, but define “outdoor” as flat, not vertical: cycling and boat trips are the actual outdoor activities here, not hiking. If you want real elevation and trekking, that’s further afield in Vietnam, not a Hoi An day trip.
