Hanoi in 7 Days: Halong Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa
Seven days is the first length where Sapa actually fits. Everything before it, one city day, a 2D1N Halong Bay cruise, Ninh Binh, the Perfume Pagoda, is the same proven spine as the 6 day version. Instead of spending day six as a buffer, this version uses the overnight sleeper bus to add Sapa properly: out overnight, a full day on the rice terraces, back overnight. Day 1: Arrival and Hanoi Orientation
Check in, walk the Old Quarter without a fixed plan, Hoan Kiem Lake, the trade-guild streets, a stall bowl of pho over a restaurant version. Get an early night; most Halong cruises pick up between 7:30 and 8:30am.
Day 2: Halong Bay Departure and the Overnight Begins
The drive out is 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the expressway. Board at the marina and spend the afternoon kayaking, at a cave stop, or swimming off the boat depending on the operator. Sunset from the deck is the entire reason to book the overnight instead of the day version that turns straight back around.
Day 3: Halong Bay Return
Cruises typically return by mid-morning, putting you back in Hanoi by early afternoon. Use the rest of the day loosely, Cafe Giang for egg coffee or the Ta Hien bia hoi corner in the evening, and get to bed early for tomorrow’s Ninh Binh pickup.
Day 4: Ninh Binh, Halong Bay on Land
Trang An and Tam Coc, an hour and a half to two hours south, deliver the karst-and-paddy scenery of Halong Bay by rowboat through a run of stone tunnels instead of a boat marina. It’s the Trang An Landscape Complex , UNESCO-listed, and most tours fold in Hoa Lu, the old 10th and 11th century capital, plus the climb up Mua Cave’s viewpoint. A full day with transport, lunch, and tickets runs $35-55 per person.
Day 5: The Perfume Pagoda, Then an Overnight Bus North
Huong Tich, the cave temple itself, is 65 to 70km southwest, about 1.5 to 2 hours by road to My Duc, then a 45 minute boat ride up the Yen stream, then a hike or cable car up to the cave. Back in Hanoi by evening, collect your bag from the hotel and head straight to the sleeper bus stop. Overnight buses on the Noi Bai-Lao Cai expressway (CT05) leave through the evening and cover the 5.5 to 6 hours to Sapa while you sleep, for $15-30 depending on cabin class.
Day 6: A Full Day in Sapa
The bus drops you in Sapa town in the early morning, giving a full day for the rice terraces, a trek out toward one of the H’mong or Red Dao villages in the valley, or the cable car up Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest peak, if the weather cooperates. Sapa’s altitude means the air is noticeably cooler than Hanoi’s, worth a layer even outside winter. Board the return sleeper bus that evening; the overnight ride does the work of a hotel night and gets you back to Hanoi before sunrise.
Day 7: Back in Hanoi, and Departure
You’ll land back in the city in the very early morning, tired but with a full extra day still ahead of you. Shower, nap if the flight schedule allows it, and use what’s left for anything the first six days didn’t cover, a final bowl of pho, a last pass through the Old Quarter, or an easy afternoon at Hoan Kiem Lake before heading to Noi Bai. Allow the standard hour for the airport transfer plus buffer for Hanoi traffic.

Is the Overnight Bus a Reasonable Way to See Sapa?
Yes, and it’s the only way that fits inside seven days without cutting into the Halong or Ninh Binh time. The sleeper bus doubles as transport and lodging for both legs, so Sapa effectively costs one calendar day rather than three. The overnight train covers the same route but needs an extra hour of road transfer from Lao Cai, making it slower for no real gain unless the train itself is the point.
Why Does Sapa Need Two Days Here and Nothing Else Does?
Because Sapa is genuinely far, 5.5 to 6 hours each way even on the fastest option, while Ninh Binh and the Perfume Pagoda are close enough to round-trip in daylight. Halong Bay gets an overnight because the cruise itself takes two days; Sapa gets one here because the travel alone eats a night in both directions.
Book the Halong cabin and the Sapa sleeper bus before landing in Hanoi; both sell out fastest in peak season and around Tet. Everything else on this itinerary can be arranged once you’re already in the Old Quarter.
