Day 1: Arrival and Hanoi Orientation
Check in, then walk the Old Quarter without a fixed plan: Hoan Kiem Lake, the trade-guild streets, a stall bowl of pho over a restaurant version. Get an early night before the Halong pickup; most boats leave between 7:30 and 8:30am.
Day 2: Halong Bay Departure and the Overnight Begins
The drive out is 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the expressway. Board at the marina and spend the afternoon kayaking, visiting a cave, or swimming off the boat, depending on the operator. Sunset from the deck is the entire reason to book the overnight instead of a day tour that turns straight back around.
Day 3: Halong Bay Return
Cruises typically return by mid-morning, putting you back in Hanoi by early afternoon. Use the rest of the day loosely: Cafe Giang for egg coffee, or the Ta Hien bia hoi corner in the evening. Get to bed at a reasonable hour, since tomorrow’s Ninh Binh pickup is early too.
Day 4: Ninh Binh, Halong Bay on Land
Trang An and Tam Coc, an hour and a half to two hours south, deliver the karst-and-rice-paddy scenery of Halong Bay without the boat marina, toured instead by rowboat through a run of stone tunnels. It’s the Trang An Landscape Complex , UNESCO-listed, and most full-day tours fold in Hoa Lu, the 10th and 11th century former capital, plus the climb up Mua Cave’s viewpoint. A full day with transport, lunch, and tickets runs $35-55 per person, and you’re back in Hanoi by early evening for a last dinner before flying out.

Is Four Days Enough for Both Halong Bay and Ninh Binh?
Yes, and comfortably. The Halong overnight fills two full days, Ninh Binh is a self-contained single day, and the one remaining day in Hanoi absorbs arrival and a rest night before each pickup. Nothing here needs rushing to fit.
Do You Need a Car for Any of This?
No. Both the cruise and the Ninh Binh tour include transport in both directions, and the city itself runs on Grab and walking. A rental starts to pay off once Sapa or Mai Chau enters the picture on a longer trip, where setting your own schedule beats following a tour bus.
