Hanoi in 5 Days: Add the Perfume Pagoda
Five days keeps the same spine as the 4 day version, one city day, a 2D1N Halong Bay cruise, and a Ninh Binh day trip, and adds a fifth day for the Perfume Pagoda, a multi-stage boat-and-hike trip most shorter itineraries skip entirely. Day 1: Arrival and Hanoi Orientation
Check in, walk the Old Quarter without a fixed plan, Hoan Kiem Lake, the trade-guild streets, a stall bowl of pho. Get an early night before tomorrow’s Halong pickup, usually between 7:30 and 8:30am.
Day 2: Halong Bay Departure and the Overnight Begins
The drive out is 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the expressway. Board at the marina and spend the afternoon kayaking, at a cave stop, or swimming off the boat depending on the operator. Sunset from the deck is the whole reason to book the overnight instead of the rushed day version that turns straight back around.
Day 3: Halong Bay Return
Cruises typically return by mid-morning, putting you back in Hanoi by early afternoon. Use the rest of the day loosely, Cafe Giang for egg coffee or the Ta Hien bia hoi corner in the evening, and get to bed at a reasonable hour for tomorrow’s early Ninh Binh pickup.
Day 4: Ninh Binh, Halong Bay on Land
Trang An and Tam Coc, an hour and a half to two hours south, deliver the karst-and-paddy scenery of Halong Bay by rowboat through a run of stone tunnels instead of by boat marina. It’s the Trang An Landscape Complex , UNESCO-listed, and most tours fold in Hoa Lu, the old 10th and 11th century capital, plus the climb up Mua Cave’s viewpoint. A full day with transport, lunch, and tickets runs $35-55 per person.
Day 5: The Perfume Pagoda, a Half Day That Takes All Day
Huong Tich, the cave temple itself, is 65 to 70km southwest, about 1.5 to 2 hours by road to My Duc, then a 45 minute boat ride up the Yen stream, then a hike or cable car up to the cave. No single leg of that journey is long, but stacked together they fill most of a day. It’s a slower, more contemplative close to the trip than the Halong or Ninh Binh days, and a fair trade for that pace.

Why the Perfume Pagoda and Not Sapa on Day 5?
Because Sapa needs an overnight of its own at minimum, and a single fifth day can’t absorb a 5.5-to-6-hour sleeper bus each way without wrecking the rest of the schedule. The Perfume Pagoda’s multi-stage drive, boat, and climb fills one day properly instead of forcing a mountain trip into a slot too small for it. Sapa gets its own two days in the 7 day version.
Do You Need a Car for Any of This?
No. The cruise, the Ninh Binh tour, and a Perfume Pagoda day trip all include transport in both directions. A rental only starts to make sense once Sapa or Mai Chau enters the picture and setting your own pace beats a bus schedule.
Book the Halong cabin first, then the Ninh Binh tour. The Perfume Pagoda trip is easy to arrange once you’re already in Hanoi, so leave it for last.
