Day 1: Arrival and Hanoi Orientation
Check in, walk the Old Quarter without a fixed plan, Hoan Kiem Lake, the trade-guild streets, a stall bowl of pho over a restaurant version. Get an early night; most Halong cruises pick up between 7:30 and 8:30am.
Day 2: Halong Bay Departure and the Overnight Begins
The drive out is 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the expressway. Board at the marina and spend the afternoon kayaking, at a cave stop, or swimming off the boat depending on the operator. Sunset from the deck is the entire reason to book the overnight instead of the day version that turns straight back around.
Day 3: Halong Bay Return
Cruises typically return by mid-morning, putting you back in Hanoi by early afternoon. Use the rest of the day loosely, Cafe Giang for egg coffee or the Ta Hien bia hoi corner in the evening, and get to bed early for tomorrow’s Ninh Binh pickup.
Day 4: Ninh Binh, Halong Bay on Land
Trang An and Tam Coc, an hour and a half to two hours south, deliver the karst-and-paddy scenery of Halong Bay by rowboat through a run of stone tunnels instead of a boat marina. It’s the Trang An Landscape Complex , UNESCO-listed, and most tours fold in Hoa Lu, the old 10th and 11th century capital, plus the climb up Mua Cave’s viewpoint. A full day with transport, lunch, and tickets runs $35-55 per person.
Day 5: The Perfume Pagoda, a Half Day That Takes All Day
Huong Tich, the cave temple itself, is 65 to 70km southwest, about 1.5 to 2 hours by road to My Duc, then a 45 minute boat ride up the Yen stream, then a hike or cable car up to the cave. No single leg is long, but stacked together they fill most of a day, a slower close before the trip’s actual buffer day.
Day 6: The Buffer Day, Spent However the Trip Needs It
By day six, something on this trip has probably run long, a Halong pickup pushed back for weather, a flight moved, or you’re just not ready to leave the Old Quarter yet. Use it. If nothing went wrong, spend it on what four packed days skipped: the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology for the stilt-house reconstructions and the 54 recognised ethnic groups, or an unhurried afternoon at West Lake and Tran Quoc Pagoda, Vietnam’s oldest Buddhist temple. Either way, keep the evening free for a final Ta Hien bia hoi round before flying out.

Is a Buffer Day Really Better Than a Sixth Destination?
Yes, for six days specifically. Everything that fits this length, Halong, Ninh Binh, the Perfume Pagoda, already uses five days without slack, and Sapa needs two full days on its own, not one bolted onto the end. Forcing a sixth destination into a single day means rushing it or cutting into the days that already work. A buffer day absorbs delays instead of creating new ones.
Do You Need a Car for Any of This?
No. The cruise, the Ninh Binh tour, and the Perfume Pagoda trip all include transport in both directions, and a buffer day in the city runs on Grab and walking. A rental only earns its keep once Sapa or Mai Chau enters the picture on a longer trip.
Book the Halong cabin first, then Ninh Binh, then the Perfume Pagoda once you’ve landed. Leave day six unplanned on purpose; that’s the entire point of it.
