Djerba 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Six days spreads the island’s own sights across four unhurried days, adds the mainland Matmata-Tataouine loop, and closes with an easy half-day across the causeway to Zarzis, a genuine resort-week pace rather than a sightseeing march. Shorter trip, drop to the 5-day plan; a full week, the 7-day plan swaps the Zarzis half-day for an overnight Sahara camp. Our Djerba guide has the fuller version of everything below.
Safety in brief: Tunisia is US Level 2, general terrorism risk, and the real do-not-travel zones sit far south on the Libya and Algeria borders, not on Djerba. The one relevant incident, a fatal shooting near El Ghriba Synagogue on 9 May 2023, was a single targeted event with no tourist-directed repeat since; the sites below carry routine, visible security rather than anything heavy-handed.
Day 1: Houmt Souk and the beach
Morning in Houmt Souk for the covered souks, the fondouks, and the working fish auction, then Borj el-Kebir (Borj Ghazi Mustapha), the 15th-16th-century fort, around 8 TND. Afternoon at Sidi Mahrès (the main Zone Touristique strip, ~13 km) or quieter Aghir/La Seguia.
Day 2: El Ghriba and Djerbahood
Morning in Erriadh (Hara Seghira) for El Ghriba Synagogue, traditionally the oldest synagogue in Africa, its current building 19th-century, tradition holding a community history here back roughly 2,500 years; dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered. Spend the rest of the morning on the Djerbahood murals in the same village, around 150 artists and 300+ pieces since 2014. Afternoon at leisure or a second beach stop.
Day 3: Guellala and Djerba Explore Park
Morning in Guellala, roughly 450 working potters and the Guellala Museum (~10 TND) for the island’s broader heritage. Afternoon at Djerba Explore Park in Midoun: the Lalla Hadria Museum of Islamic art, a heritage village, and a crocodile farm holding around 400 Nile crocodiles (feeding 5pm), combined entry about 20 TND.
Day 4: Midoun’s market and the beach
An easier day: Midoun’s Friday market if the date lines up, otherwise a full beach day, and from November through March, consider trading either for the boat trip to Ras Rmel (Flamingo Island) for the flamingo colonies.
Day 5: Matmata and Tataouine mainland loop
A full day trip to the mainland, roughly 11 hours door-to-door. Matmata’s troglodyte Berber cave-homes, plus Hotel Sidi Driss (the interior set of Luke Skywalker’s home), then Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane, a fortified granary complex, and, time allowing, the hilltop villages of Chenini and Douiret. Day 6: Zarzis and departure prep
Zarzis, on the mainland coast just across the causeway, is an easy half-day if you want one more change of scene without another long excursion, then back to Djerba for a final beach evening and packing.

One concrete tip: keep day six light on purpose, a half-day excursion after a long desert day the day before is plenty. And underneath all of it: the Tunisian dinar is a closed currency, exchange only what you’ll spend and keep every receipt, since only around 30% is reconvertible on departure.
