Bangkok 6 Days: Day Trips Do the Work

Six days is our 5-day plan plus the extra day that fixes its one weak point: Kanchanaburi stops being a rushed single day and becomes the overnight it actually deserves.

Day 1: Arrival and base

Take the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi, 45 THB (~$1.35) to Phaya Thai, about 30 minutes. Don Mueang arrivals should budget closer to an hour, the airports sit roughly 50km apart with no direct link. Base in Sukhumvit or riverside and use Grab, not Uber, for evenings. With four day trips ahead, one of them an overnight, pack a day bag you can grab quickly each morning rather than repacking a full suitcase; several of these mornings start before 7am, and you’ll want a separate overnight bag ready for Kanchanaburi.

Day 2: Ayutthaya

The UNESCO-listed Historic City of Ayutthaya is the most essential trip in this family. Rapid trains from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal take about an hour; cheap Ordinary trains from the older Hua Lamphong station run closer to two hours, as little as 15-20 THB ($0.50) in 3rd class, check current fares on the State Railway of Thailand’s site . The historical park is free to walk; individual ruins run 50 THB each, or the 220 THB ($6.50) combo pass covers six temples for 30 days. Rent a bike for Wat Mahathat and the riverside Wat Chaiwatthanaram. The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Ayutthaya page has the fuller list of temples and events.

Day 3: Floating market and the Maeklong Railway Market

Amphawa on a weekend, the more local market, Friday through Sunday roughly 2pm-9pm with firefly boat rides after dark; Damnoen Saduak otherwise, a daily morning market best before 9am. Pair either with the Maeklong Railway Market, where vendors retract entire stalls in under two minutes as a train passes, roughly 8 times daily. The standard combined tour runs about 690 THB (~$20.50).

Day 4: The Ancient City (Muang Boran)

Over 200 acres of scaled replicas of Thailand’s major landmarks in Samut Prakan, closer in than any other trip on this list. Foreign adult entry is 800 THB (~$24), open daily 9am-7pm; a rental bike or the on-site tram is close to essential given the size.

Day 5: Kanchanaburi, part one

Travel out in the morning, 2-3h west, and spend the afternoon on the Bridge over the River Kwai, a stretch of the Death Railway by train, and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery . This is the sobering core of the trip, POWs and forced laborers died building this railway under brutal conditions, and it deserves the unhurried afternoon a same-day round trip doesn’t allow. Stay overnight in Kanchanaburi town rather than racing the sunset back to Bangkok.

Why does this itinerary spend two days on one trip?

Because a rushed single day covers the bridge, a short train ride, and maybe one more stop before the drive back eats the evening, and this is the one trip in the whole family where that isn’t enough. An overnight buys time for the JEATH War Museum properly, the cemetery without watching the clock, and a longer stretch of rail line than the five-minute version most day tours give you.

Day 6: Kanchanaburi, part two, then back to Bangkok

Spend the morning at the JEATH War Museum or on a longer walk of the rail line, then head back to Bangkok by early afternoon. You’ll be back at your hotel well before dinner with a genuinely fuller picture of Kanchanaburi than any single-day version gives you. Book a room in Kanchanaburi town itself for the overnight rather than a resort further out along the river; the war cemetery, the museum, and the train station are all a short walk from the town center, and skipping a taxi transfer back and forth buys you back an hour of actual sightseeing.

Confirm Thailand’s current visa-exemption allowance before booking; the rules were mid-change in 2026. Book Kanchanaburi accommodation ahead if these six days land in the Nov-Feb peak season or around a Thai public holiday.
