Bangkok 5 Days: Day Trips Do the Work
Five days is our 4-day plan plus a fifth day at Kanchanaburi, the one trip in this family that genuinely deserves more time than a single day gives it. Read the flag below before you lock the schedule in.
Book these before you go:
- An Ayutthaya day tour on Viator : worth it if train logistics are the obstacle, not the cost
- A floating market and Maeklong Railway Market tour on GetYourGuide : bundles both stops in one trip
- A River Kwai and Death Railway tour on Viator : the single-day version, book ahead in peak season
- Your Sukhumvit or riverside hotel on Booking.com : book ahead in the Nov-Feb peak season
| Day | Focus | Distance from Bangkok | Travel time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival, base, orientation | - | - |
| 2 | Ayutthaya | ~80km north | ~1-2h |
| 3 | Floating market + Maeklong Railway Market | ~80-100km SW | ~1.5-2h |
| 4 | Ancient City (Muang Boran) | ~30km SE | ~45-60 min |
| 5 | Kanchanaburi | ~130km west | ~2-3h |
Day 1: Arrival and base
Take the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi, 45 THB (~$1.35) to Phaya Thai, about 30 minutes. Don Mueang arrivals should budget closer to an hour, the airports sit roughly 50km apart with no direct link. Base in Sukhumvit or riverside and use Grab, not Uber, for evenings. With four day trips ahead over the next four days, pack a day bag you can grab quickly each morning rather than repacking a full suitcase; several of these mornings start before 7am.
Day 2: Ayutthaya
The UNESCO-listed Historic City of Ayutthaya
is the most essential trip in this family. Rapid trains from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal take about an hour; cheap Ordinary trains from the older Hua Lamphong station run closer to two hours, as little as 15-20 THB ($0.50) in 3rd class, check current fares on the State Railway of Thailand’s site
. The historical park is free to walk; individual ruins run 50 THB each, or the 220 THB ($6.50) combo pass covers six temples for 30 days. Rent a bike for Wat Mahathat and the riverside Wat Chaiwatthanaram. The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Ayutthaya page
has the fuller list of temples and events.
Day 3: Floating market and the Maeklong Railway Market
Amphawa on a weekend, the more local market, Friday through Sunday roughly 2pm-9pm with firefly boat rides after dark; Damnoen Saduak otherwise, a daily morning market best before 9am. Pair either with the Maeklong Railway Market, where vendors retract entire stalls in under two minutes as a train passes, roughly 8 times daily. The standard combined tour runs about 690 THB (~$20.50).
Day 4: The Ancient City (Muang Boran)
Over 200 acres of scaled replicas of Thailand’s major landmarks in Samut Prakan, closer in than any other trip on this list. Foreign adult entry is 800 THB (~$24), open daily 9am-7pm; a rental bike or the on-site tram is close to essential given the size.
Day 5: Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi, 2-3h west, is sobering rather than scenic: the Bridge over the River Kwai, the Death Railway built by Allied POWs and forced laborers, the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery , and the JEATH War Museum. Group day tours run roughly 1,200-2,000 THB (~$36-60) including transport, guide, lunch and entrance fees; private or Erawan Waterfall-inclusive versions cost considerably more.
Should this really be a day trip?
Only if it has to be. A single day covers the bridge, a short Death Railway train ride, and maybe one more stop before the drive back eats the evening, that’s the version this itinerary assumes if five days is your hard limit. Given a spare day anywhere else in the week, staying overnight in Kanchanaburi town lets you actually walk the war cemetery and ride a longer stretch of the rail line instead of the rushed five-minute version. Our 6-day version works in exactly that extra day.
Dress modestly for the war cemetery and the JEATH museum, it’s a memorial site rather than a photo backdrop, and covered shoulders go over better than tank tops even without a formal dress code at the gate. Most day tours pick up between 6:30 and 7:30am and drop you back in Bangkok by early evening, so confirm the exact pickup point and time the night before rather than scrambling the morning of. If your itinerary has any flexibility left after booking, ask the tour operator about swapping in Erawan Waterfall for the museum stop; it’s a common add-on and worth doing if you’ve already covered the war history on a previous trip.
Before you go
Confirm Thailand’s current visa-exemption allowance before booking; the rules were mid-change in 2026. Pack layers for day 2 and day 4’s biking and day 5’s museum walking; this is the most physically active day-trip stretch in the whole family. Keep a printed or downloaded copy of your tour confirmations for days 2, 3 and 5, cell signal thins out well before Kanchanaburi and rural stretches near the floating markets. Build in a genuinely lazy morning somewhere in the first two days if the schedule allows it, four day trips back to back with no buffer is a fast way to burn out by day five.
