Don’t expect a “Tung Chung Market” walking-tour stop or a village called “Nam A Bon” on any real route out of Tung Chung; neither shows up on the ground here. What actually exists are two walks so different in scale that lumping them into one itinerary does both a disservice. The short one: Tung Chung Heritage Circuit About 4 kilometres, roughly 2 hours, entirely flat and self-guided. Start at Tung Chung MTR, walk through Fu Tung to Tung Chung Battery, an 1817 gun position rediscovered under jungle growth in 1980, then follow the shaded paths of Tung Chung Valley to Tung Chung Fort, an 1832 Qing Dynasty naval stronghold with its granite walls and cannons intact.

There’s no “Tung Chung Beach” to sunbathe at alone, whatever an old listing might say; Tung Chung’s shoreline is bay, mudflat, and promenade, not a swimming beach. The real solo highlight here isn’t lying on sand, it’s a hike that most day-trippers never attempt. The Ngong Ping Rescue Trail Also called the Cable Car Walk, this route was originally a service track built for cable car construction and emergency evacuation, and it’s now open as a serious solo hike.

Skip the “Lantau Buffalo Park” some lists mention for a romantic afternoon. It isn’t a park, and pairing your partner with grazing water buffalo isn’t the honest sell it sounds like anyway; the actual buffalo sightings happen loose in Ngong Ping Village, not at a dedicated attraction built around them. Most multi-day itineraries assume you’ll sleep in Kowloon or Central and day-trip out to Lantau. Flip that assumption for a Lantau-heavy trip and Tung Chung becomes the better base, not a consolation prize for skipping the harbour. What staying here actually buys you Three hotels anchor Tung Chung for this: the Silveri Hong Kong MGallery, an eco-luxury build directly above Citygate; the Novotel Citygate, linked indoors straight to the MTR and outlet mall; and the Sheraton and Four Points by Sheraton, sharing a seaside site on the northern waterfront with sea and airport views.

If a family activities list for Tung Chung mentions “A Symphony of Lights,” ignore it. That light show plays over Victoria Harbour, roughly 30 kilometres and a train ride away from Lantau Island, and it has nothing to do with a stay here. What Tung Chung actually offers families is quieter, and once you strip out the padding, genuinely solid. The glass-floor cable car Standard Ngong Ping 360 cabins are fine, but the Crystal and Crystal+ cabins are the ones worth the upgrade for kids: a transparent floor turns the 25-minute ride into a chance to watch cargo ships, hiking trails, and airport runways pass directly underneath.

Search “bus tour Tung Chung” and you’ll find operators reselling something you can buy yourself at the NLB counter for a fraction of the price: a seat on the regular public bus up Tung Chung Road. There’s no separate hop-on sightseeing coach here, and there doesn’t need to be. The real bus tour costs a few dollars New Lantau Bus routes 11 and 23 both leave from the terminus at Tung Chung MTR and climb the switchbacked Tung Chung Road through dense forest, cresting at Pak Kung Au between Lantau’s two highest peaks before descending toward either Ngong Ping (Bus 23, 45 to 50 minutes) or Tai O (Bus 11, about 50 minutes), passing coastal views of Cheung Sha Beach and Tong Fuk on the way down.
