Basing a Lantau Trip in Tung Chung
Most multi-day itineraries assume you’ll sleep in Kowloon or Central and day-trip out to Lantau. Flip that assumption for a Lantau-heavy trip and Tung Chung becomes the better base, not a consolation prize for skipping the harbour.
What staying here actually buys you
Three hotels anchor Tung Chung for this: the Silveri Hong Kong MGallery, an eco-luxury build directly above Citygate; the Novotel Citygate, linked indoors straight to the MTR and outlet mall; and the Sheraton and Four Points by Sheraton, sharing a seaside site on the northern waterfront with sea and airport views. All three put you closer to the Ngong Ping cable car terminal and the NLB bus interchange than any hotel in Central does, which matters when your days start with a cable car ride or a bus to a trailhead rather than a harbour view.
What a Lantau-based two or three days looks like
Day one covers the spiritual and cultural core: the cable car up to Ngong Ping, the Tian Tan Buddha, the Wisdom Path, and a bus onward to Tai O for the evening, with the option of overnighting at the restored Tai O Heritage Hotel instead of coming back. Day two is physical: an early bus to Pak Kung Au for a Lantau Peak or Sunset Peak hike, descending into Mui Wo for a swim at Silvermine Beach before a ferry back to Central or a bus back to Tung Chung. A third day stays local, covering Tung Chung Fort, Hau Wong Temple, and Citygate Outlets before an evening at the waterfront promenade.
Where the base falls short
Tung Chung’s own restaurant and nightlife scene is thin next to Kowloon or Central; most evenings here mean a hotel restaurant or the mall, not a night out. If your trip is split evenly between city nightlife and Lantau hiking, staying in one place for the whole trip means compromising on one half. Basing in Tung Chung and taking one dedicated day trip into Central by MTR, rather than trying to run the reverse commute daily, is the workaround.
Extending across the bridge
For trips longer than three days, Bus B6 connects Tung Chung to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge port in 10 to 15 minutes, linking to the cross-border shuttle across the 55-kilometre bridge to Macau or Zhuhai, which turns a Lantau base into a springboard for the wider Greater Bay Area rather than a dead end.
The verdict

Book the Tai O Heritage Hotel night, if you want it, well ahead of a weekend, since it’s a small restored property with limited rooms and no walk-in availability to speak of.
