Walking From Tung Chung to Tai O
Don’t expect a “Tung Chung Market” walking-tour stop or a village called “Nam A Bon” on any real route out of Tung Chung; neither shows up on the ground here. What actually exists are two walks so different in scale that lumping them into one itinerary does both a disservice.
The short one: Tung Chung Heritage Circuit
About 4 kilometres, roughly 2 hours, entirely flat and self-guided. Start at Tung Chung MTR, walk through Fu Tung to Tung Chung Battery, an 1817 gun position rediscovered under jungle growth in 1980, then follow the shaded paths of Tung Chung Valley to Tung Chung Fort, an 1832 Qing Dynasty naval stronghold with its granite walls and cannons intact. From there it’s a short walk to Hau Wong Temple, built in 1765, before finishing at the Tung Chung Old Pier. This is the version to do in an afternoon with no particular fitness required.
The long one: Tung O Ancient Trail
This is a different proposition entirely: 13 to 15 kilometres, 4.5 to 5.5 hours, the historic coastal footpath villagers used to reach Tai O before any road existed. It runs from Yat Tung Estate and Hau Wong Temple along the mudflats of Tung Chung Bay, through Sha Lo Wan, a traditional village sitting directly under the Hong Kong airport’s takeoff path, then on to San Shek Wan and Sham Wat Bay, where open-air noodle shacks make a natural lunch stop, before climbing a headland and dropping past Yeung Hau Temple into Tai O itself. The surface is a mix of concrete village paths and maintained gravel trail, with moderate undulating terrain rather than flat walking. Carry plenty of water and insect repellent; there’s no reliable shop access along most of the route.
Picking between them
The heritage circuit suits a spare afternoon or a family with limited walking tolerance; the Tung O Ancient Trail is a genuine half-day commitment that ends in a different town and needs a bus or taxi back unless you’re staying in Tai O overnight. Doing both on the same day is possible only if you start the long trail at dawn.
The verdict
If you only have one afternoon in Tung Chung, take the heritage circuit; if you have a full day and sturdy shoes, the coastal trail to Tai O is worth every hour it takes. For where to stay if you’d rather not walk back the same day, see multi-day trips from Tung Chung .
Fill a water bottle before you leave Yat Tung Estate if you’re doing the long trail; there’s no dependable place to refill again until you reach Tai O.
