The route Ajmeri Gate is the western entry to the walled city, and the quietest place to begin. Kishanpole Bazaar sells brass ornaments and handicrafts. Bapu Bazaar is the place for juttis, the curled camel-leather shoes, and block-printed fabric.

Jaipur sightseeing works best as three clusters rather than one long list. The old city’s monuments sit within a few hundred metres of each other, Amber and Jaigarh share a ridge to the north, and Nahargarh is a separate climb. Cluster one: the old city City Palace is a tiered-ticket complex of courtyards and museums, so budget by tier rather than assuming a single price. Jantar Mantar, built in 1734, has 19 instruments, among them the 27-metre Vrihat Samrat Yantra sundial, accurate to two seconds.

Jaipur does romance at the edges of the day. A balloon basket drifting over the Aravalli ridges at dawn, then a fort wall above the city at dusk, covers most of what couples come for. Delhi, Jaipur and Agra Delhi to Jaipur is about 280 km and takes 4.5-5 hours by road. From Jaipur, Agra is 240 km and takes 4-5 hours each way, so a round trip in a single day means nine or ten hours in a vehicle.

A 27-metre sundial that tells the time to within two seconds is the kind of thing children remember about Jaipur. The city is hot and crowded, but a handful of stops keep young travellers interested without long queues. Jantar Mantar The 18th-century observatory was built in 1734 and is a UNESCO site. It has 19 large masonry instruments outdoors, and children can walk among them and climb the stairways on several.

Thirteen levels of stone steps drop twenty metres into the ground at Abhaneri, and it is only two hours from Jaipur by road. A few other escapes work the same way: leave early, return for dinner. Samode, about 1 hour north Samode is a village with a 475-year-old palace, known for the mirror-work Durbar Hall, hand-painted frescoes and Mughal terraced gardens. It is the shortest of the three drives and suits a slow half-day, which makes it a fair choice if you have already spent days among forts.

Under the palace roofs of Jaipur sit silver urns the size of small rooms, an Egyptian mummy and the largest wheeled cannon on earth. These indoor attractions each have their own ticket logic, and the cheapest route through them is rarely the obvious one. City Palace The complex in the old city holds the Diwan-i-Khas, the Mubarak Mahal with its textile galleries, and the Gangajali urns, huge sterling-silver vessels made for Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II.

Some of the best hours in Jaipur cost nothing at all: the arcaded bazaars of the old city, the Hawa Mahal facade from the street, and the lake at dusk.
