Why Mongolia Is Built for Group Trips
Solo backpacking barely exists once you leave Ulaanbaatar, and that turns out to be an advantage: nearly every countryside product in Mongolia is already built around a small group.
The default trip is already a group trip
Because self-drive is impractical here, nearly all countryside travel runs through a driver-guide and a 4x4 or UAZ van, and that vehicle model naturally suits 4-8 people splitting a vehicle and a cost. Multi-day tours into the Gobi, central Mongolia, or Bayan-Ölgii that dominate booking platforms like Viator and GetYourGuide are built around this small-group format by default, not as an add-on option.
Naadam is the biggest shared event on the calendar
National Naadam runs 11-13 July 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, with wrestling, archery, and horse racing across multiple venues; provincial Naadams run in aimag centers slightly earlier in some years. It is the single best week to have a group along, since venues, transport, and ger camps all book out around the date and splitting logistics with other people makes the whole week easier to plan.
Warrior-training camps are the group-specific product
Multi-day “Genghis Khan warrior” camps combining archery, wrestling, and horse riding are explicitly run as group programs, typically ger-camp based east of Ulaanbaatar, and work well for a group with mixed experience levels since both the archery and the riding scale from complete beginner up.
Two workshops built for a group table
The felt-making workshop run with the Asral NGO and the Tsagaan Alt women’s felt cooperative in Ulaanbaatar is a hands-on half-day session that works well shared, since most of it is collaborative wool-to-felt work at a shared table. Cooking classes teaching buuz (steamed dumplings) and khuushuur (fried mutton pastries) are typically capped around 6 participants, small enough to stay hands-on but built for a group rather than a private lesson.
Wildlife and lake trips scale naturally too
Small-group tours to spot Przewalski’s horses at Hustai National Park, or multi-day trips around Khövsgöl Lake combining hiking, riding, and boat time, are sold as shared departures rather than private charters by most operators, which keeps the per-person cost down for a group willing to share a vehicle.
