Theth’s high mountain passes get most of the attention, but the valley floor has its own network of walks that need nothing more than sturdy shoes and a few free hours, no pass crossing, no guide, no permit. Central Village Heritage Walk (2 to 3 hours, easy). A relaxed loop starting at the 1892 stone Church of Theth in the open village meadow, winding through stone-walled country lanes, crossing the river, and stopping at the roughly 400-year-old Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) before finishing at the Old Watermill (Mulliri i Vjetër).

There’s no funicular, no viewing tower, and no hop-on-hop-off bus anywhere in Theth. Every view on this list costs you either a walk or a stop at a road pullout, which is a large part of why they still feel earned once you get there. Qafa e Thorës, before you even reach the village. If you’re driving in on SH21, the pass itself, at 1,700 meters near Buni i Bajraktarit, delivers the single best panorama of the trip: a straight look down into the 1,000-meter-deep glacial chasm of the Theth valley, framed by limestone peaks on every side.

The honeymoon version of Theth doesn’t involve a resort pool or a couples’ massage menu. It involves a wood stove, real silence, and a stone guesthouse where you might be the only guests that week. That’s the actual draw here, and it works, once you stop expecting the version of romantic that a beach resort sells. The stone guesthouse, not the suite. Traditional family bujtina like Vila Gjecaj and Bujtina Polia put you in wood-beamed rooms with cast-iron stoves and a balcony facing the peaks, for a fraction of what a branded honeymoon suite costs elsewhere.

Search “multi-day trips from Theth” and most results quietly assume you can base yourself here and drive out to other towns for the day. You can’t. Theth sits at the dead end of a mountain valley, and the only road out retraces the same 2.5-hour SH21 pass back to Shkodër you drove in on. There is no road trip to Krujë, Tirana, Lake Skadar, or the Riviera that starts from Theth without first leaving the valley for good.

Families do bring kids to Theth, and the valley genuinely rewards the ones old enough to walk it. The 45-minute walk to Grunas Waterfall along the Shala River is manageable for children aged 6 and up, with a flat, scenic stretch around the church meadow (Fushë Logu i Kishës) for younger legs that need a break.

Theth isn’t a village with a square you park next to and explore on foot. It’s an 8 km glacial valley split into separate stone hamlets, and where you sleep decides how far you’re walking every single day. The layout matters more than any single sight. Central Theth (Kolaj) holds the 1892 church, the school, mini-markets, and most guesthouses. Grunas, 2 to 3 km south, guards the waterfall and canyon. Okol and Gjelaj, north of the center under Mount Arapi, are the trailhead for the high passes.
