Split a 20 JOD Makmoura lunch across a group and the number looks like pocket change. It is not: the Jordanian Dinar is pegged at 1 JOD to roughly 1.41 USD, so a 20 JOD bill for the table is closer to 28 US dollars, not 20. Group budgets in Umm Qais need that conversion done before anyone agrees to split a check.
1. Feast at Galsoum’s Kitchen
Groups of 4 to 15 gather on cushions in a traditional diwan for Makmoura, layered pastry and slow-braised chicken baked for hours and sliced at the table, along with village Mansaf and seasonal Mujaddara. 2. Hike the Arqoub Romi trail
The Yarmouk Forest Biosphere Reserve’s Arqoub Romi trail runs 12 kilometers over 5 to 6 hours through protected oak forest with an RSCN guide, a genuine group outing rather than a stroll. 3. Cycle the ridge instead

4. Watch the sunset from the Romero terrace
The stone terrace at Romero Umm Qais Resthouse comfortably seats a group for Levantine mezze and grilled meats as the sun drops behind the basalt ruins. Bring a layer; the elevation and open exposure to the Galilee wind make terrace evenings colder than the daytime heat suggests, in spring and autumn especially.
5. What the checkpoints on the drive up mean
The final approach road passes routine Jordanian military checkpoints, since the site sits under 2 kilometers from the Syrian and Golan Heights frontiers. Jordan overall sits at US State Department Level 3, rising to Level 4 only within about 3.5 kilometers of the Syria and Iraq borders, and Umm Qais is explicitly named as an exception to that restriction: the site is treated as a normal, visited destination on a controlled road. That exception covers the marked ruins, not any unofficial ground closer to the fence.
6. Passes, fees, and the return trip
Every Jordan Pass tier, Wanderer, Explorer, and Expert, covers Gadara admission, which otherwise runs a modest fee, current listings mostly say around 3 JOD, though confirm at the gate since older sources cite more. The pass only waives the 40 JOD tourist visa fee if the whole group buys online before arrival and stays at least two consecutive nights in the country; buy it after landing, or leave early, and it is charged per passport on exit. Local minibuses back to Irbid stop running around 15:30 to 16:30, so a group without its own transport should not plan a lingering sunset dinner without a pre-booked driver. Convert every group price to your own currency before agreeing to split it. A number that looks trivial in JOD is rarely trivial once it lands on a card statement in dollars, euros, or pounds.
