Day Trips From Amman: Jerash to the Dead Sea

Nobody needs to pack an overnight bag to see Jerash’s colonnaded ruins or float in the Dead Sea. Both sit within a 45 to 60 minute drive of Amman, and Capital Governorate’s whole value as a base is that four or five of Jordan’s headline sights are reachable and back before dinner.
Jerash, the best-preserved Roman city most visitors underrate
Jerash sits 45 km north of Amman, about 45 to 50 minutes by car. The colonnaded Oval Plaza, ringed by 56 Ionic columns, opens onto the 800-meter Cardo Maximus, where original chariot-wheel ruts are still visible in the paving stones. Two intact Roman theatres and the monumental Temple of Artemis round out a site that easily fills half a day. Entry is covered by the Jordan Pass , which has to be bought online before you land in Jordan, not at the gate, or the visa waiver it carries does not apply. The Dead Sea, 45 to 60 minutes southwest
Descending from Amman’s hills to 430 meters below sea level, the lowest dry land on Earth, takes under an hour and drops you into 34 percent hyper-saline water where sinking is genuinely difficult. Resort day clubs (Kempinski Hotel Ishtar, Mövenpick Resort) and the public Amman Beach both sell day passes, running 25 to 45 JOD depending on the operator. Madaba and Mount Nebo, 40 minutes southwest
Madaba’s St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church holds a 6th-century Byzantine floor mosaic of the Holy Land, assembled from over 2 million tesserae. Nine kilometers further, Mount Nebo marks the traditional spot where Moses viewed the Promised Land, with a panoramic overlook across the Jordan Rift Valley toward Jericho and the Dead Sea hills.
The eastern desert castles, an hour to 90 minutes out
Along Highway 40 east of Amman, three Umayyad sites make a distinct loop from anything to the north or west: Qusayr Amra, a UNESCO-listed bathhouse with vivid 8th-century frescoes; Qasr Kharana, a fortified two-story desert caravanserai; and Qasr al-Azraq, the black basalt fortress T.E. Lawrence used as a headquarters during the 1917 to 1918 Arab Revolt. Entry to Department of Antiquities sites generally, including these, runs through ticket.gov.jo if you have not already sorted admission through the Jordan Pass. As-Salt and Ajloun, for a slower day
As-Salt, 30 minutes northwest and reachable via the new Route 107 BRT line, earned UNESCO status in 2021 for its yellow-limestone Ottoman architecture and its walkable Harmony Heritage Trail. Ajloun Castle, an hour and 15 minutes north, was built by one of Saladin’s generals to hold off Crusader advances, and since 2023 pairs with the Ajloun Teleferique cable car gliding above the pine forest between the visitor area and the castle ridge, priced around 8 to 10 JOD for non-Jordanians.
Wadi Mujib, if you want something physical
Jordan’s “Grand Canyon,” an hour and 15 minutes southwest, is a self-guided scramble swimming upstream through waist-deep water to a 20-meter waterfall. It runs seasonally from April 1 to October 31, requires visitors to be 18 or older, and costs 21 JOD. Pace yourself against the return drive, not just the site.
