Tel Aviv Walking Routes by Neighbourhood
Travel advice. Israel’s security situation can change quickly, so check your own government’s current travel advice before booking and again before you travel. Missile or drone alerts are possible. Install the Home Front Command app (Pikud HaOref), and when you are out walking, note the nearest protected room, communal shelter or windowless stairwell. See the UK government advice .
Tel Aviv is flat and compact, and the best walking routes follow its neighbourhoods. Start early in summer, carry water, and plan around Shabbat, when markets close on Saturday and trains and standard buses stop from Friday afternoon.
Route 1: Rothschild Boulevard and the White City
Begin at the southern end of Rothschild Boulevard and walk north to Habima Square. The tree-lined central promenade has cafes and benches, and the buildings on either side are 1930s Bauhaus and International Style, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Turn into Dizengoff Street and Bialik Street for more. The Bauhaus Center at 77 Dizengoff Street runs an English-language tour every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, with tickets bought from 09:45. The classic route is easy to follow on your own too.
Route 2: Carmel Market to the Yemenite Quarter
Shuk HaCarmel is a long lane of food stalls, and the adjoining Yemenite Quarter (Kerem HaTeimanim) has quieter streets. Go in the morning. The market closes on Saturday and earlier on Friday, and each stall sets its own hours. A late lunch at a market-side wine restaurant such as HaBasta, at 4 HaShomer Street, is a good finish, and a booking is wise on weekend evenings.
Route 3: Neve Tzedek to Jaffa
Neve Tzedek is the oldest district outside Jaffa, dating from 1887, and Shabazi Street is its main lane of galleries and boutiques. From there, continue south along the seafront. Jaffa is part of the city, so no transport is needed. Reach Clock Tower Square, the flea market a block east of it, the port and the Abrasha Park viewpoint.
Route 4: Florentin street art
Florentin is the southern district known for murals. Late morning is the cooler time to look at the walls. It is a district to wander, not a monument to visit. Levinsky Market is nearby and, like Carmel Market, shuts on Saturday and early on Friday.
Route 5: the Tayelet
The seafront promenade is a long, flat walk and a bike path that links the Tel Aviv Port, the central beaches and Jaffa. It works at any hour, but sunset and early morning are the best. Beaches are for walking outside the bathing season, which runs from May to October, with lifeguards at about 07:15 to 16:45.
Respectful stops
Rabin Square marks the spot where Prime Minister Rabin was assassinated in 1995, and a memorial stands in a corner of the square. Hostages Square, outside the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, carries its official name from 2026. Walk both quietly.
Practical tips
Wear sun protection in summer, and expect rain in winter, when storms can arrive suddenly. Public transport needs a Rav-Kav card or an app, not cash. See the Tel Aviv municipal visitor site for transport basics.
