Sri Lanka Romantic Getaways: Tea and Sea
Wake above a tea estate with mist in the valley, then finish the week with your feet in warm sand. That is the Sri Lankan honeymoon in one sentence, and it runs on two stays: the hills and the south coast.
Tea-country bungalows
Planter-era bungalows around Nuwara Eliya and Hatton offer log fires, tea on the veranda and views over rolling estates. Rates vary widely, from modest to very high, so compare a few before you commit. Check rates on Booking.com for the town and its surroundings. The hills are cool, so pack a layer for the evenings.
Sunrise at Pidurangala
For a shared early start, climb Pidurangala near Sigiriya. The ticket is about LKR 1,000 and the rock is open from 05:00 to 18:00. The path scrambles past cave temples to a ledge facing Sigiriya’s lion rock across the forest canopy, and crowds are thinner than on Sigiriya itself. Bring a head torch and shoes with grip.
South coast beach villas
Tangalle and Mirissa have villas set back from quiet beaches, and the water is calm and dry from November to April. A seafood dinner for two on the sand, with prawns, snapper and squid, typically runs LKR 8,000 to 16,000. Whale watching from Mirissa is possible November to April, with the best chances December to March.
Planning the trip
- Pick the coast by month. The southwest monsoon (May to September) wets the south and west, while the northeast monsoon (October to January) wets the north and east. Mid-December to March is the sweet spot for the south.
- Dress and manners. Sri Lanka is conservative away from the beach. Keep displays of affection modest and cover shoulders and knees at temples.
- Buddha imagery. Never pose with your back to a statue, and keep any Buddha tattoo covered, since both can lead to arrest or deportation.
- Getting around. A hired car and driver is simplest between the hills and the coast.
- Read UK travel advice before you book, and use the 4-day itinerary as a skeleton if time is short.
Slow evenings for two
An hour-long Ayurvedic oil massage at a certified wellness centre costs about LKR 5,000 to 10,000. A clay-pot cooking class in Ella or Habarana runs LKR 4,500 to 8,500 and covers grating coconut, pounding spices and cooking curries over a fire. In tea country, a factory visit ends with a tasting that suits a cool afternoon.
Verdict: if you only have a week, give four nights to the coast and two to the hills, and book the hill bungalow first because the best ones fill early.
