Sri Lanka Activities by Season and Coast
Sri Lanka runs two weather systems at once, so the activity you want decides the month you book. Choose the coast first and the sights second.
Which coast in which month
The southwest monsoon runs from May to September. It brings rain and rough seas to the south and west coasts and the hill country, while the east and north coasts stay dry with calm water. The northeast monsoon, October to January, flips the picture: rain falls on the Cultural Triangle, the east and the north, and the south and west coasts get their dry season.
- November to April: beginner surf at Weligama, whale watching from Mirissa (peak December to March) and easy swimming at Unawatuna and Tangalle.
- May to September: surf at Arugam Bay, snorkelling at Pigeon Island National Park off Trincomalee, and beach days at Nilaveli and Passikudah.
- August to October: the wild elephant gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla, where herds of up to about 300 feed on the reservoir grassland.
Activities worth planning around
Surf lessons. A two-hour beginner session with a board in Weligama Bay costs roughly LKR 4,000 to 7,000.
Safari. Udawalawe has elephants all year and is the simplest park for a first jeep trip. Yala is the leopard park, but its Blocks 1 and 2 close during dry spells, so check with the Department of Wildlife Conservation before you book. Park fees are charged per person in US dollars, with service charge, VAT and jeep hire on top. You can compare safari jeep options on GetYourGuide before settling on a park.
Hiking. The Horton Plains loop to World’s End is about 9.5 km and the park is open from 06:00 to 18:00. Go early, because mist usually covers the 880 m drop by about 09:30.
Rafting. Kitulgala has Grade II and III rapids through rainforest, a good half-day outside the surf season.
Whale watching. Boats out of Mirissa run November to April only. Pick a licensed operator, expect a naturalist guide at best, and choose a boat that keeps its distance rather than chasing.
Temple manners
Cover shoulders and knees at temples and take off shoes and hats. Never pose with your back to a Buddha statue, and keep any Buddha tattoo covered. These acts can lead to arrest or deportation: a British visitor was deported in 2014 over a Buddha tattoo, and three French tourists received suspended six-month sentences in 2012 over photographs.
Money and weather
The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), at about 334 to the US dollar in autumn 2026. Heritage sites price tickets in dollars and take payment in rupees at the gate rate. From October to December the hill country and the north-east see heavy rain, so read the UK government travel advice for flood and landslide notes, and see the official tourism board for general planning.
For more ideas by theme, the sightseeing page covers the ancient cities and forts.
Verdict: December to March gives the south coast its best weather, whales and beginner surf, so pair it with Udawalawe and leave Minneriya for another year. Whichever month you pick, book the coastal stay before anything inland.
