Sri Lanka Attraction Tours and Entry Rules
Five Sri Lankan attractions, five different sets of entry rules: a dress code at one, dollar pricing at another, and a tea tasting that follows a factory floor. Knowing the rule before you arrive saves queue time.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy
The temple is open daily from 05:30 to 20:00, with ritual offerings from 05:30 to 07:00, 09:30 to 11:00 and 18:30 to 20:00. Foreign visitors pay LKR 3,000, or LKR 2,500 for SAARC, Thai and Myanmar passport holders. The ticket also covers the Dalada Museum, the World Buddhist Museum, the Tusker Museum and the Royal Elephant Stable. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed, and footwear and bags are checked at the entrance before you pass security screening. Details sit on the temple’s official FAQ page .
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Foreign adults pay US$35 (about LKR 11,700) and SAARC visitors pay US$20, settled in rupees at the gate. The ticket office and prices are listed by the Central Cultural Fund . The climb goes up iron staircases past 5th-century frescoes to the summit ruins. Pidurangala Rock next door costs about LKR 1,000 and gives the classic view back at Sigiriya.
Tea in the hill country
Pedro Tea Estate near Nuwara Eliya runs an 1885 factory tour. You follow leaf through withering, rolling, fermenting, firing and grading, then finish with a cupping tasting. Factory floors are cooler than the plantation, so a light jacket helps at that altitude. If you want a guide, browse Sri Lanka tea factory tours on Viator to compare tasting formats.
Museums and gardens
The National Museum in Colombo sits in an Italianate colonial mansion and holds the throne and crown of the last king of Kandy. On the west coast near Bentota, Brief Garden (Bevis Bawa) and Lunuganga (Geoffrey Bawa) show two brothers’ takes on tropical landscape design, with Italianate vistas at Lunuganga and modernist pavilions.
Tips for all five
- Carry rupees: heritage ticket offices price in dollars but accept local currency at the day’s rate.
- Dambulla’s cave temple is roughly LKR 2,000 to 3,000, so confirm at the gate.
- Dress for temples at every stop: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.
- For the island-wide route, the 5-day itinerary links these stops by road.
Verdict: if you only buy one ticket, make it Sigiriya, and climb at opening time before the stairs fill up. Put the tea factory on a hill-country day when you are already driving through.
