Sofia Sightseeing, Church by Church
Sofia’s sightseeing core fits inside a walkable half-mile, and most of the pricing decisions come down to one question: is the nave free but the crypt or museum behind it ticketed.
St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Open daily 07:00-19:00, the cathedral nave is free to enter, though a strict dress code applies: shoulders and knees covered, hats off for men. Compare hotels near the cathedral on Booking.com if staying within walking distance of this cluster matters. The Museum of Christian Art in the crypt, a branch of the National Gallery entered via the external staircase on the church’s north side, charges €10 standard, €4 for pensioners, over-65s and students, and €2 on Thursdays; a photo permit costs around €5. Boyana Church
This UNESCO World Heritage site, open daily 09:30-18:00 April through October and 09:00-17:30 the rest of the year, holds 1259 frescoes considered among the finest surviving examples of pre-Renaissance medieval art. Capacity is capped at 8-10 visitors for strictly 10 minutes at a time to protect the paintings, and photography is banned entirely. Adult entry runs about €6, students and seniors about €1, and reservations are recommended through boyanachurch.info . Bus 64 runs there from the center.
Ancient Serdica and St. George Rotunda
The preserved Roman street grid of Serdica sits directly above Metro Serdica, its open-air walkways free and accessible around the clock; the covered archaeological hall costs about €3. Nearby, inside the Presidency courtyard, the Church of St. George Rotunda is Sofia’s oldest surviving building, 4th-century Roman brick with medieval frescoes inside, and free to enter daily 08:00-19:00.
National History Museum, Boyana
Housed in Todor Zhivkov’s former government residence on bul. Vitoshko Lale, the museum holds the 4th-century BC Panagyurishte Gold Treasure, 6.1 kg of solid gold. Adult entry is about €5, or €6 combined with Boyana Church; it is free on the last Monday of the month after 15:00. Check historymuseum.org for the current combined-ticket rules.
The verdict
Book a half-day for Nevsky and the Serdica ruins downtown, and a separate half-day for Boyana Church and the History Museum, since both sit in the same southern district but the 10-minute frescoes cap means Boyana alone can eat an hour of waiting in peak season.
